One of the hardest things about going abroad for extended periods of time is being separated from friends, family and loved ones. Whether it’s a year travelling, a few years away at university in Europe, or even relocating to Australia; there’s no doubt the toughest part is being away from those who are closest to us. Keeping in touch, though, has never been easier given the wealth of communication options that are available in the 21st century: email, instant messaging, texting and, of course, telephone calls are just some of the ways that links can be maintained with home. But with telephone calls especially, the costs can mount quite easily, especially when long distances are involved. A popular option to overcome the cost implications of phoning abroad is to use a prepaid calling card. Different cards can be used for different countries as costs do vary, but in general this is a much cheaper means of calling abroad than simply using a normal ‘billed’ telephone. The cost can be as little as a few pennies per minute, depending on the location, so this would seem the perfect way of keeping in touch with friends and loved ones, right? Well, even better than ‘cheap’, of course, is ‘free’. And the internet comes up trumps again on this front. Using VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) technology, it is possible to talk over the internet to any location around the world. All that’s needed is an internet-enabled computer with built-in microphone and speakers. Or alternatively, a separate headset can be purchased for improved sound quality. Indeed, free internet calls are now accessible to anyone who has the bare-minimum, basic equipment. So now, there is no need to watch the clock whilst chatting to friends in other countries, or constantly checking whether there’s enough credit left to make a call. The only issue left to consider is whether talking-time in the UK is actually bed-time in Australia! Furthermore, if talking isn’t enough, then by adding a small web-cam to the computer set-up it is also possible to make free video calls too; so now it’s possible to converse face to face with friends or loved ones across the globe, at any time of day at no extra cost. So, as difficult as it can be at times to be separated from friends and loved ones when living abroad, it has never been easier to keep in touch thanks to the advent of the World Wide Web. Free internet calls are now available to everyone, meaning staying in touch no longer costs the earth.
