When We Are Loved Unconditionally, We Get a Glimpse of the Inner Self

When children and pets love us openly and completely, we attribute this quality to their innocence, never realizing that this love is also our true nature, the nature we have long ago forgotten. This forgetting is not a flaw but an intricate part of the human experience, a chance for us to once again connect to what is real.

For if there is forgetting, there is also remembering, and that is what happens when we are loved in an absolute way. When an animal loves us, there is something familiar about the feeling that makes us feel whole. We do not try to analyze it or question its validity. We accept the love wholeheartedly and readily embrace the feeling as genuine. That is because without guile or manipulation, our pets love it all. We do not have to be beautiful or rich-we are simply loved for who we are.

And because we no longer feel the need to protect ourselves, we can relax and open ourselves up to loving.

When we are loved in this way there is a direct heart-to-heart connection. In this state of egoless love, we are loved without reservation. Because the other is without an agenda, there is nothing to get in the way, nothing to block the flow of love. All we have is a blank slate, a mirror that reflects our own Inner Self back to us. We mistakenly think the love we are feeling comes from outside us, unaware that we are its origin. It is only when we are loved and love back in this unconditional way that we come to know that it was right under our noses all the time.

This, then, is the beauty of another and what all this loving stuff is about. We need another initially in order to see ourselves. This human game has quite a sense of humor. It has hidden our true nature and dared us to find it. Being loved in this way, we touch the essence of our being and know unequivocally that we are the source, we are the love we feel.

Experiencing this truth, we become brave. Slowly at first, we reach out to love. Having practiced with animals and small children, we are ready for things less safe. Rather than remain separate, we make the first move. Simply because that's who we are, we love another. We want nothing back-no commitment, no soothing words-just the opportunity to open our heart and do what comes naturally.

And along comes love. With heartfelt gratitude, we are loved in return. See, everyone knows everything all the time. Even though intellectually we sometimes can't explain it, we know it anyway. We know how we are loved; we can feel it. It is not something we think about but something we know is real because the Inner Self, which is pure love, is the same in us all. And when we are loved from that place, it is something we never forget.
