What Could Be Better Than Teak Furniture

By: Kenny F Leichester

Why is it a smart choice then? For starters, here is a background of this hardwood. Teak is imported from Southeast Asia and was previously used in building ships. Timber is used in the manufacturing of outdoor furniture, boat decks, and other items where weather resistance is required. It can also be used as indoor flooring and as a veneer for furnishings inside your house. It is easily worked and has natural oils which make it suitable for use in exposed locations, where it is durable even when not treated with oil or varnish. Teak cut is harder and more durable if it is from old trees grown slowly in forests; teak from young trees grown in plantations is more prone to splitting and water damage.

In India, teak are used in making doors. Window frames columns and furniture. You can find it dominating the old fashion houses. Teak can also resist termite attacks too. Even with all the great characteristics of teak, the mature wood still carries a good price. The forest department has made it a point to grow teak in all the states to make sure that they will always be ample supply of teak.

A wide variety of types of furniture made from this type of wood can be chosen from that will withstand decades of use subject to proper care given. What should a buyer do first before making an actual purchase? Continue reading to learn more.

Decisions
Decide on what it is that you actually need first. For someone who has just moved to a new house, maybe a patio set is needed but if you already have a garden patio established in your home, you might just need the few odd pieces to complete your collection.

Budget
Next step is setting your budget. While the cost of teak furniture is generally a little more than you would pay for acacia, cedar, or oak, the fact that furniture of this hardwood is strong and durable, it is money well spent and a good investment.

Where to Buy
There are just so many stores you can find these days specializing on teak patio furniture. They can be real stores or those online. Both can give you competitive prices and discounts. Find one that specializes in teak patio and garden furniture for better range and choices.

Care
After making the purchase, decide whether you would like your teak furniture to be weathered look or well maintained look. Leaving it to be weathered look means you skip applying teak oil and let nature takes it course.

If you choose to coat the furnishing then teak oil is a good choice. It will prevent stain from seeping into the wood and will delay the bleaching effect from exposure to sunlight. Be sure the furniture is clean and dry before applying the said oil. Use a paint brush and start at the top of the object and work downwards. If a second coating is necessary, apply it an hour later to let the previous coat dry. Avoid putting teak oil over accumulated oil or dirt to prevent darkening of the wood. After the coating process, buff the furnishing with a clean, dry piece of cloth.

To restore the natural color of teak, very fine sandpaper is used and you have to work it in the direction of the grain. To clean the teak furniture, use soft bristled brush and mild soapy water. You should not use wire bristled brush or steel for it can damage the wood. If used, the pieces of wire can get stuck on the surface of the wood therefore causing it to discolor.

Storage of Teak
The storage of teak furniture should depend on the climate of the place you live. Some furniture is designed in such a way that they can be folded so as to save space and for storage convenience. The furniture can then conveniently place indoors during the intense winter or cold days. Besides this you can also cover your furniture to protect them. Bear in mind that teak is durable and is able to withstand most extreme weather making it is your choice whether to store them or not.

Teak outdoor furniture can certainly enhance the look of your garden or patio. Though it is not a cheap option, you can be sure that you wouldn’t have to replace them for a good number of years. Your teak furniture will be investments worth making for the comfort of your home.
