Treating Dogs with Fleas: Tips for Successful Treatment

By: Ben Binding-27115

We’re going to take a look at various treatments, all with their varying degrees of success, for dogs and other domesticated animals plagued by fleas.

A quick and relatively easy method of getting rid of fleas is the flea bath with flea shampoo. The reason this shampoos is successful is because of an active ingredient called pyrethrins. While many dogs will sit still for the traditional flea bath, cats will most likely not. Immersion in water is not a favorite feline pastime.

The solution for cats is most often a powder or spray. While they can be effective, they can actually be unhealthy for people, most notably children. The pesticide in these sprays and powders can easily transfer to others who pet the animal, some time after the product is applied to the fur.

Flea collars are another option, but less popular. Their main feature is not just the elimination of fleas, but the prevention of them too. The drawback, as one can imagine, is that they’re very limited in the area they affect. Areas farther away from the collars proximity, including places like the legs and tail, simply aren’t going to be affected. Another significant drawback is that the collars are continuously emitting pesticides into the air, which as stated above can be unhealthy to people in the area, especially children.

Yet another treatment option that’s becoming increasingly popular is the oral variety. Two examples are Capstar and Program. They’re given once a month to dogs and cats and come in pill form. The pills have been noted as being very effective at retarding the reproductive rate of fleas, and also affect the critters’ ability to bite.

And lastly, there are a variety of natural methods used as flea repellant, including applying a form of pumice to carpeting, steam cleaning the carpet and using oils like pennyroyal, which have been noted as being effective in reducing flea infestations.
