To make sure you get the best remodeling company for your needs, here are a few things to keep in mind: Do they do the work you need? It may seem strange to you, but not all remodeling companies remodel everything. Some may not do bathrooms, while others may stay away from kitchens. The very first thing you need to look for is a remodeling company that does the work you need. Are they NARI certified? NARI is the National Association of the Remodeling Industry. Each member of the NARI must agree to comply with a Code of Ethics, which requires them to follow good business practices and performance standards. If the remodelers don't follow the Code of Ethics, their membership is revoked. Do they have previous remodeling experience? A lot of new home builders are labeling themselves as remodelers. There are major differences between the two, and experience is key to the success of your project. On such an important project as your home, take the time to look into the background of the remodeling company. Do they have a certificate of insurance? No matter how careful and good a remodeling company may be, accidents do happen. A good remodeler will at least have workman's compensation and company liability insurance. Some will also have completed operations insurance, which means that if something happens to your house as a result of worker error, the company pays for the damages. Don't just take the company's word for it that they have insurance, either. Ask for information directly from their insurance company instead of accepting copies of the insurance certification. How do previous clients feel? Most remodeling companies will be more than happy to give you references. A lot of people make the mistake of thinking there can't be anything wrong with the company if they give references. The references don't get checked, because the client feels safe just having the information in their hands. You can't afford to blow it off; whether the company is good or not, you may still find out something that wouldn't sit well with you (though it sat well with other clients). When you get references, talk to them and listen carefully. - Would you hire them for another remodel? - Did they keep the jobsite neat? - Were there many delays or were they on time? - Were they easy to work with? - Did they keep you updated during the remodeling process? - How well did they deal with issues that came up? When and how do they expect to be paid? Most remodelers expect a down payment before the work starts, and then further payments at specified stages. Some, however, may ask for full payment before starting the job and specifies cash as the form of payment. In cases such as this, you may want to look at another remodeler; many homeowners have lost their money by the "remodeler" taking the money and running. How detailed are their contracts? A good contract will cover most, if not all, of the details of the job from beginning to end. Included in a detailed contract should be: - Scope of the work (what's being done) - Quality of the materials they'll be using - When the work will begin and end - Total price - Payment requirements/terms - Warranty (if there is one) Your home is one of the most important things you own, and you want someone who will treat it with the same level of care that you do. By remembering these points when looking for a remodeling company, you'll know you have the right one for your remodeling needs.
