TheNews about the New Ford Mondeo Coupé

By: Susan Roberts

When the brand new Ford Mondeo Coupé was first announced over a year ago there was a great deal of fevered anticipation and speculation bandied back and forth amongst fans of the Blue Oval. What was it going to look like? Would Ford redesign the classic Mondeo dashboard to include all the latest gadgetry? And what kind of power would be housed under the bonnet? A great number of questions were asked, but the answers were not exactly forthcoming.

The initial filtration of conjecture that hit the automotive press seemed very positive. The available engines were rumoured to be sourced from the top end spec of the current Mondeo range, which is likely to culminate in a turbocharged 217bhp 2.5-litre petrol five-cylinder engine. If you have been lucky enough to sample the current Ford Mondeo Titanium X Sport model, your mouth will already be watering at the prospect of this even more powerful behemoth. Add to this proposed touch-screen Sat Nav, Bluetooth, MP3 Connectivity and Keyless Start and the Mondeo Coupé began to sound like a very interesting concept indeed.

The good news didn't stop here however, when the first concept pictures and photos began to leak on to the internet you could almost hear jaws hitting the floor all around Europe and the collective questioning of “Why does that Mercedes-Benz CLS have a Ford badge on it?” This seems to be the precise intention of the engineers and designers at Ford, who are eager to take on the trinity of German prestige manufacturers (Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz). The huge front grille, flared wheel arches and slinky, yet bulky body design all point firmly in the direction of the prestige market.

The majority of supposition hovering over the new Mondeo Coupé suggests that the basic model will be roughly half the price of the Mercedes-Benz CLS (rumoured to be around the £25,000 mark), which would lead one to conclude that this incarnation of the Ford Mondeo will find a very comfortable spot in the sports coupe niche and wrestle a great deal of market share from the competition.

The only question of the Ford Coupés sales potential rests on whether the executive market are going to find the Ford badge a little less prestigious than they are currently used to. Whilst the majority of sensible car buyers are more interested in specification, power and reliability, there exists a sizeable demographic who will make their new car choice based solely on the badge that adorns the bonnet rather than the engine that exists beneath it.

The Ford Mondeo Coupé is still very much mired in speculative territory, with Ford refusing to be drawn on release dates or final specification. Many reports suggest that 2011 is the likely rollout year, before the new Mondeo models are due in 2012-2013. If you can wait another 2 years for a new executive Coupé, then you may very well save yourself a great deal of money by hanging on for the Ford Mondeo Coupé. In terms of style, performance and reliability, you are unlikely to find better quality for such a reasonable price.
