Yorkshire may surprise some with just how varied it is. From the traditional image of miles and miles of beautiful country side, grand stately homes and fascinating historical sites there is also vibrant and buzzing cities. Some of the best shopping and nights out in the country can be found in Yorkshire as well as great walks, climbing plus a whole host of other outdoor sports. Leeds is firmly establishing it’s self as a major destination for shopping, culture and nights out. In 2006 Leeds was voted the number one shopping destination in the whole of the UK. The city boast many of the country leading retailers, many of who have there flagship stores in the city. One of the top shopping districts is the Victorian Quarter. Over 70 fashion stores are located under is stained glass roof. The likes of Louis Vuitton, Vivienne Westwood, Paul Smith, Harvey Nichols and T.M. Lewin all have stores here as well as some top independents. Christmas and New Year is a great time to visit the city. Leeds has the biggest Christmas lights display in the country and from the New Year the beautiful Millennium Square plays host to the largest outdoor ice rink in Europe. There is a culture boom in Yorkshire like never before. Both Leeds and Bradford have fantastic film festivals showcasing movies from across the world as well as the best of home grown cinema. The Northern Ballet Theatre put on fantastic production to wow and entertain audiences. Yorkshire can even boast top class opera from Opera North. One of Yorkshires favourite sons, David Hockney, has a gallery, the 1853 Gallery at Salts Mills. Yorkshire has a rich literary history that very few places in the world can match. The Brontë sisters were born and raised in Yorkshire and set many of the stories there too, famously the Yorkshire moors became as much of a character and part of the story in Wuthering Heights as Cathy and Heathcliff. Even today Yorkshire can boast producing writers such as Alan Bennett and Helen Fielding author of Bridget Jonas’ Diary. Yorkshire has some much more to offer than the stunning country side. There is a whole wealth of things to do and places to see that is will take may trips just to take half of it in.
