The Unmissable Sights of Brussels

By: Paul McIndoe

If you are thinking of getting away from it all for a long weekend, Brussels might not be the first city you think of going to. But in actual fact there is plenty there to charm and delight you, no matter what you enjoy doing. You could spend a whole weekend simply browsing the many shops which sell superbly crafted pralines; not to mention tasting them of course.

While you are increasing your energy levels with pralines, you can decide which of the numerous sights of the city you want to visit. If you want to see the largest greenhouse you have ever laid eyes on, make sure you don’t miss the Royal Greenhouses, which have also been referred to as ‘glass palaces’. They are certainly big enough to live in, but if you want to go inside you will have to visit during the spring.

If royalty doesn’t grab your interest, perhaps the Cantillon Brewery would be more appealing. This is a brewery run by traditional methods, and you can see how everything works to produce this famous beer. The entry price is very reasonable and they include a free beer too!

In a city such as this you will quite often see classic artwork in the various museums, but in Brussels there is something altogether more stunning on display as well – and it is very indicative of the modern times.

Take a stroll along the Comic Strip Route and you will see exactly why it has been given that name. You can marvel at 18 delightfully colourful murals featuring all manner of cartoon characters. Once you have walked the route you can drop into the Comic Strip Museum itself, which is a fitting tribute to a talent which is rife in Belgium. Tintin is just one example of how comic strip art has been so successful in the country.

You can also get a taste of much more of Europe while you are in Brussels too. Simply go to the charmingly named Mini Europe, and witness many of Belgium’s most famous sights in miniature, along with those from other European countries. You can even topple the Berlin Wall and make Vesuvius erupt if you really want to!

It’s clear that there is plenty to do in Brussels, which is why you need to think carefully about where you are going to stay and perhaps even what time during the year is best to visit. But as flights to Brussels operate all year round, and not to mention having a wide range of accommodation available to choose from, planning your trip should not be too difficult. All that is left to do then is to make a list of the places you don’t want to miss; make sure you have your camera with you and set out to enjoy all that Brussels has to offer.
