Britain has been declared a snoring nation after it was revealed that a quarter of us snore. Even more shocking is the news that two in three of those that do snore, snore so loudly they wake there partners. According to the recent survey there are typically five different types of snorers: The Old Banger: sounds like a broken old car with a spluttering engine. The McEnroe: Sounds like tennis players grunting The Snorchestra: a long slow snore that builds into a deafening climax The Snorter: similar sound to that of a horse snorting The Walrus: a continues groaning noise when sleeping While snoring is a source of amusement for most for others it is a real problem affecting our health and relationships. According to sleep experts snoring is on the increase affect that has been attributed to drinking and unhealthy diets. Partners of snorers are losing sleep which is having adverse affects on there day to day life and at work. The affects on there relationship with the snorer can also be affected. Not only does the lack of sleep cause strained relationships but if partners are forced to sleep apart a lack of intimacy and sex can really affect a relationship. Snores themselves can suffer from their snoring. Sleep apnoea (where a person stops snoring during sleep) is a condition which often afflicts snorers. Sleep apnoea which is not treated can increase blood pressure and may even increase the size of the heart leading to a higher chance of heart attacks. The snoring sound is produced when the airway is obstructed resulting in air turbulence and vibration inside the throat There are numerous causes to snoring, the main culprits being: Drinking: Alcohol causes your muscles to relax even more than normal when you are asleep, this causes the back of the throat to collapse creating snoring. Smoking: Cigarette smoke can irate the lining of the throat and nasal passages causing swelling and catarrh. This causes the passages to become constricted and congested decreasing the airflow from your nose and making it difficult to breathe. Sleeping position: if you sleep on your back your tongue, chin and any excess fatty tissues under your chin will relax and squash your airways. This is why experts say you should sleep on your side as it helps keep the airways open. Diet: Access wait from poor diets can cause snoring by adding extra weight and pressure on your airways constricting your breathing. Many snoring aids available may be able to help cure your problem as will a reduction in drinking and smoking plus eating a healthy diet. If however they after all this snoring still occur it might be worthwhile to consult your doctor.
