In California, the state budget crunches are so hard the schools are letting their sports teams go. Many sports that are not considered main stream have lost their funding. Even teams that were in the play-offs were cut at many schools. Many Parents and students alike were stunned when they were told there would not be a school team even if they raised the money for it privately. The schools were interested in funding with teams that could be 'guaranteed' every year. Funding for the current year was not enough to turn the school boards decisions around. If your child wants to play a sport which requires fees or you are trying to raise money for schools teams, here a few strategies you need to employ. Getting sponsorship for a team or a child will not work with old style technology. Many local businesses used to sponsor teams. All they got was a plaque and maybe their name on the jerseys. It's time to offer the local businesses more. You can offer a local business more help on marketing. You can agree to pass out flyers and coupons at the game. You can even make the flyers for them and add a little icon saying they are sponsoring your child or team. This allows people to feel more comfortable in patronizing the business. They know that it's just full circle. If they put money into the business, the business can continue to help the team. You can create a sponsorship sheet like many non- profits do with a banner at the top, letting other sponsors know they can get a discount at the business if they sponsor also. All of this has to be negotiated with the business ahead of time. You can create a win- win situation for the business. You can have a garage sale dedicated to the support of the team. There is no need to sign up with expensive candy and cookie companies to get products to sell. Many families have more than enough stuff in their garages and attics to generate cash for uniforms and registration fees. You can set up on online store with the profits dedicated to going to uniforms and teams. Be sure to state how much you are actually giving. You want to be transparent so that people will not think you are just another rip off artist. Years ago, When my mother worked for a day-care center, the center found out a parent was going around town selling Easter baskets and telling people the money was going to the child care center. She got many parents at the center to buy the baskets. The woman did not have any agreement with the day care center and no funds ever made it into the day care center coffers. The baskets were delivered as promised however, many people felt cheated. They may not have ordered a basket if they had realized it was just going into the woman's pockets and not helping the day care center at all. Ask each business or person you ask to sponsor you child, how you can really help them. Agree to a plan of action and then follow through. You can create a mini-stimulus package in your own town, if everyone pulls together. And children do not have to miss out on sports participation due to lack of funds.
