The Popularity of the Winter Break

By: Paul McIndoe

Winter breaks are getting more and more popular every year. The opportunity to visit a warmer destination and escape the office can be very tempting; however, taking a winter break doesn't necessarily mean travelling around half the world.

Of course, whilst a holiday on the other side of the world may sound tempting, the costs can quickly add up; therefore, it can prove wise to plan ahead. Unlike the summer holidays, most winter breaks tend to be short and often this means it can be more sensible to cut down on your travelling time; instead allowing you to make the most of your time off.

So, if you're not chasing a sun holiday abroad, it can prove more beneficial to avoid the airports and stay within the country. And while it may not seem as exciting as a holiday abroad, there are many towns and cities waiting to be explored.

One of the best ways to have an enjoyable holiday without ever stepping on a flight is to take a shopping trip to a neighbouring city. Although your nearest destination may be within driving distance, most people tend to be unfamiliar with a lot of their nearby towns and cities. As such, a shopping trip to a nearby destination can provides the perfect mix of retail therapy and cultural exploration to give you the perfect winter weekend break away.

But, if visiting a city or town is not necessarily your thing, there is always the option of taking a weekend break in the nearby countryside. Indeed, a weekend away from the city can help you relax and unwind, leaving you fresh and prepared for the rest of the winter season.

What’s more, in recent times skiing holidays have grown to become incredibly popular. And with many airports now providing the ability to fly to a nearby skiing destination, it's easy to see why they have taken off so quickly. In addition, skiing holidays ensure you are enjoying the outdoors constantly, and the fresh air can help boost your health, and recharge the batteries for the months ahead.

It is perhaps no surprise that one of the most popular times to take a winter break is during the Christmas period. And if you choose to fly abroad for a Christmas break, it often gives you the chance to relax in another country and gain a new understanding of how a different culture celebrates the festive season.

But whilst winter holidays may not always appear as popular as the summer breaks, it is important to remember that hotels will more than likely go very quickly. Whether it's a skiing trip abroad or even a quick shopping trip down the road, winter breaks are growing in popularity. In fact, more and more people are taking advantage of the opportunity to break up the dark season, with a relaxing trip away.
