The Multicultural Offerings of Montreal

By: Andrew Regan

One of the most exciting cities in the world, Montreal is renowned for its superb cuisine, vibrant nightlife, cultural diversity and that special joie de vivre (joy of life) that French Canadians are so famous for.

Montreal is diverse enough to make a suitable holiday destination for singles and couples, as well for friends or family. A mountain of art galleries, unrivalled assortment of restaurants and an underground city mean you can chop and choose activities to suit your mood; you certainly won’t run out of things to do when visiting the metropolis of Montreal.

First things first, you have to eat and as Montreal has more restaurants per capita than any other city in North America, you won’t be stuck when looking for something to savour. The expansive selection of restaurants means there is something to suit every taste, budget and occasion from bargain family feasts to a romantic meal for two. For an authentic taste keep your eyes peeled for Québecan treats like crepes and poutine.

Once you’ve had your fill its time to check out what to do with yourself. If you’re feeling active then Montreal’s tag as the city for walkers will please you. Old Montreal is a great spot to take a stroll through and as the city is definitely one of distinctly different neighbourhoods you’re sure to find a surprise around every corner.

Saint Lawrence River, which you pass on your trip into Montreal if coming from the airport, offers rafting and jet boating and makes an exhilarating and enjoyable way to experience the city from a totally different view.

Of course, if the weather isn’t so good you might not want to be outside all day but don’t despair as Montreal has RESO; an underground city with a subterranean network of walkways, shopping centres, restaurants, movie theatres and even subway stations. Stretching across an astounding 33 kilometres downtown you never need to be outside in Montreal if you really don’t want to!

If you do need to come up for some fresh air a trip to the Biodome provides an interesting day out for both young and old. An indoor recreation of the four different American ecosystems, the Laurentian forest, tropical forest, St. Lawrence Marine ecosystem, and the polar worlds of the Arctic and Antarctic, its an obvious choice for nature lovers but has proven to be a popular spot for just about everyone.

Shopping in Montreal is also a superb experience with a satisfying mix of malls, department stores and individual boutiques. Akin to the French, the people of Montreal are well known for their impeccable style and seemingly effortless chic, so a shopping expedition proves an enjoyable experience.

If festivals are your passion then its best to check out their dates before considering your flights to Montreal as you wouldn’t want to miss the city’s festival offerings if at all possible. An international jazz festival, comedy and world film festival amongst many others are just a small piece of what’s on offer, in a city that offers so much all year round.
