It’s probably fair to say that the 21st century world is a very different place to what it was a mere 120 years ago. Technology has progressed so rapidly in the past century or so that there are people still alive today that were born long before the first airplane flight, television broadcast or, indeed, the first public transatlantic telephone call was made. Moreover, you are so accustomed to such technology nowadays that it’s perhaps a little difficult to imagine how you could ever have managed without it. Even if you look at the technological advances of more recent times, it’s interesting to see how quickly the world has changed and, in particular, with the internet now commonplace in an estimated 65% of all UK homes, how differently you live your life, as a result. Thanks to the internet, you now have far more control for specific scenarios. As such, no longer have you to queue in the bank at lunch time, or spend hours at weekends traipsing around travel agents to book a holiday. From the comfort of your own living room, you can access online banking facilities and travel websites 24 hours a day. In other words, you can now fit such time consuming activities around your own life, rather than the other way around. But perhaps the biggest change the internet has brought is the way people are able to communicate with each other. This is particularly true for many businesses who aim to reduce their costs; with efficient use of the internet providing more freedom to perform the various daily duties. Of course, the humble telephone was once enough to keep people connected across the globe, but emails and instant messaging services have enabled people to stay in touch for next to no cost. And there are many advantages to communicating through such mediums. Communicating in real-time through instant messaging can be a far more convenient way of conversing, as it mimics real-life conversation much more accurately. Conversations can be started, stopped and continued at a later point if something more pressing comes up. Furthermore, chats can be augmented by sending photos, documents and any other digital files that is relevant to the conversation. Moreover, for those situations when talking is the preferred means of communication; particularly in the event of an important meeting required to take place, then business VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) technology enables you to chat to the specific recipient through the internet at lower costs than that of a standard phone line. In addition, it also allows users to call standard landlines and mobile phones for a fraction of the cost of a traditional telephone, which is good news for business and social users alike. But, what really sets aside modern-day technology from what was on offer only around a decade ago is online video calls. From two quite remote parts of the world, people can now talk to each other ‘face-to-face’ in real-time, brining the communications world well and truly into the 21st century.
