It is perhaps not too surprising that Florida is at the top of many people's 'wish list' of places they would love to visit. With its tropical climate, laid-back lifestyle and the onus on having fun; it’s the kind of place that many British people spend the cold winter months wistfully dreaming about. And it is Orlando that proves the most popular area in Florida to visit – evident in the fact that an estimated 52 million visitors flock there each year. The thing that makes Orlando such an attraction is the fact that it offers up a lifestyle that many of us would like to experience (even if only for a little while). We’ve all seen it in the movies; girls in roller skates trailing along the beachside esplanade, sidewalks lined with palm trees and lush gardens with outdoor swimming pools. There’s more than a hint of glamour to it all and sometimes you just long to visit somewhere that offers up that feeling of pure indulgence – it’s the ultimate holiday escapism, even if it is a little over-the-top. Orlando seems only too happy to play on its fairytale quality. Since 1971, when Walt Disney World first opened its gates, a whole host of theme parks and attractions have sprung up – sometimes making Orlando feel a bit like one giant fun park. In the daytime you can easily take in a variety of theme parks (Disney World, Universal Studios, Sea World, Blizzard Beach – to name but a few) and then as the sun begins to fade you could take an evening stroll through the beautiful Harry P. Leu Gardens, with its orchid house, floral clock and butterfly garden. As evening falls, you can continue the fun by going to watch a basketball game by the aptly named Orlando Magic team. A perfect time to visit Orlando is perhaps during the gloomy winter months, when the winter blues set in and you long to escape to somewhere sunny and carefree. However, flights to Orlando will operate all year round, which is good to know especially if you reach the point where you can't resist the temptation of visiting a location that offers fun and sun. But don’t worry if the thought of all those theme parks is making you feel queasy, because Orlando can be just as interesting if you just sit back, relax and explore the city at a quiet pace. It is dotted with art galleries, the beautiful Lake Eola and many quiet green spaces. And a day spent peacefully exploring can reveal just as much magic.
