When you study the various Ages of man from caveman days until now you have to ask what factually is the Age that we are living in now? The Space Age fizzled. Noone went terribly far into space but we got Star Trek out of it! But what is this current age?. I think it would be easy to find concensus if we just confronted that we are in the Hydrocarbon Fuel Age. Oil is part of most of what you see…well, petroleum is. And Earth’s finances and its wars revolve around its energy supply, so is its environmental meltdown, its pharma nightmares (the pills are made from petroleum!). I could go on but I feel that we have today pretty well nailed. What about we look in to the crystal ball and presage tomorrow? The post-Hydrocarbon Fuel Age will be hardly recognizable to people alive today. Centralized power plants belching smoke and poisons will be a thing of the past: there will be no power grid. The grid will gradually wither and die during the transition to distributed New Energy systems, which could be as swiftly and dramatic as the transition to the era of information via computers and the web that actually started in the mid-1970s. Environmental problems which stem back to hydrocarbon-fuel engine systems will be a thing of museum exhibits. In a world of effectively free energy (no substantial recurring costs for the energy), all the world’s populations will become richer. Individuals will be empowered with much greater opportunity to be self reliant as they are unchained from central hubs from the authorities that today rule energy use. (Governments will do what governments have done since time immemorial, they will try to tax and control the availability of energy, but they will fail—just in the same fashion that they have failed so far in trying to tax the Internet.) It will be possible to build self-contained dwellings and communities anywhere that construction materials can be brought in—in remote forests, atop mountains, on uncharted islands, on the surface of bodies of water, and even deep down on ocean or lake floors! There will be no geographic localization of fuel resources (such as in the Middle East today), so the fight over oil resources will vanish with a key underlying cause. Cheap removal of salt from saltwater and water pumping will cause deserts to bloom. It will be extremely cheap to produce clean, potable water pretty much any place. Agriculture will profoundly change, as New Energy makes fertilizer, light, temperature contol and protection from mosquitos and other harmful creatures available anywhere:. Through advances already made in the field, rendering of nuclear water waste and depleted uranium inert will be easy to accomplish— reduce it to non-radioactive forms. And, shocking but almost inevitable, it will be possible to produce rare elements inexpensively through reactions— yes, an age of “modern alchemy” will emerge. Possibly it will be known as the Age of Alchemy! I know, it sounds quite “utopian”. When does this all begin? It already has. Recent developments applied to 90 year old technology have made it possible to create a hydrogen/gasoline hybrid engine!
