Tamatori hime tattoos are so varied and include so many images they can be applied in many areas of the body and in many sizes. The images can also spread over many areas by connecting the images or by drawing one image over a long section of the body. The dragon and its tail can wrap round a limb or the torso,it can also stretch over a long area from side to side or from top to bottom. The story that gave the Tamatori hime tattoos included dragons, pearls, gods and a brave woman who nearly sacrificed herself for what she saw as the greater good. Therefore there are images of bravery ,sacrifice and fighting with dragons that could be included. Many will have the tattoo mainly or totally on the back as its the largest area that can be tattooed on. The tattoo often starts on the lower back and then can be spread over the back area. The dragon ,if included, can cover the whole of the tattoo or can be a main focus point. Knowing that the dragons are forbidden from attacking a carcass she cuts herself to virtual death and hides the pearl within her body. As she starts to die she signals for her husband to pull her up on the rope she is attached to. She begins to slip away when back in her husbands arms but is saved by the watching gods. They see the sacrifice she was willing to commit for the sake of the greater good, namely rescuing the bead and decide to make her immortal, princess hime. She then became the god for all the pearl divers and of course the focus for the Tamatori hime tattoos. The Tamatori hime tattoos focus on many parts of the legend from the dive to the fight with the dragons to the scene with the gods watching over her. With the princess comes the dragons and various other sea creatures beside. The wearer if using some of these aspects can show more of the story and can have more designs of nature, bravery and of a gallant fight between the human world and the mythical under sea world. The Japanese are famous for having intricate designs of tattoos that tell stories and have many recognisable features. The wearer then has the chance to say much about themselves with these designs, taking aspects from the Tamatori hime tattoo theme and those of others beside. Taking aspects like wisdom and sacrifice from this legend and then blending it with other stories to say what the wearer wants to say about themselves. As with all tattoos do research first on the actual designs and the tattooists to see if they are up to the job, especially if you want a highly detailed design done. A detailed drawing will look great when done well but equally will look awful if done badly.
