Suss Out Your Sunglasses

By: Adam Singleton

Many people regard sunglasses as a fashion accessory; however, there are several reasons for wearing them that relate to the health of your eyes as opposed to the latest trend.

Sunglasses serve as protection against the harmful UVB rays that are produced by natural sunlight, whilst research suggests that regularly wearing sunglasses can lessen your likelihood of developing cataracts in later life. It is therefore important that children wear sunglasses too, particularly because their eyes are even more sensitive than adults. Damage to the eye from UVB rays occurs over time, so it’s important to protect your eyes from an early age.

One thing to look out for when shopping for sunglasses is the level of protection they offer. Some sunglasses can provide 100 percent of the Ultra Violet (UV) protection that you need and some do not. You should always check this before purchasing your sunglasses and if you’ve already bought a pair but are unsure of the protection offered then take the sunglasses to your optometrist who will be able to verify.

The tint on a pair of sunglasses is irrelevant to the level of protection offered, so don’t be fooled into thinking that darker shades offer more protection as this is not always the case. Sunglasses also protect the delicate skin around the eyes from the UV rays that cause wrinkles and premature aging, which is another good reason to invest in a pair of quality sunglasses.

As well as protecting from UVB rays, sunglasses also protect your eyes from wind, dust and debris by acting as an effective barrier. This barrier affect additionally reduces the rate of evaporation of tears thus helping to keep your eyes moist and comfortable.

Another benefit of sunglasses is their ability to reduce headaches and eyestrain. In dim light your pupils dilate and of course, constrict in brighter light. In very bright conditions your pupils cannot constrict enough to reduce light to a comfortable level, which causes you to squint, leading to headaches and eyestrain. What's more, as sunglasses reduce the amount of light reaching the eyes, the pupils constrict less therefore reducing the likelihood of getting a headache or uncomfortable eyestrain.

We all know that on a bright and sunny day the amount of glare increases and surfaces like water or snow can cause extremely bright reflections that are distracting and can interfere with vision. Reflective glare is particularly dangerous when driving, skiing, or boating so it’s highly advisable to wear sunglasses in order to reduce glare and have safer, more comfortable vision.

And when it comes to the actual styles and options available with women’s sun glasses, it is good to know that you can find ones to suit every face shape and individual taste. Indeed, with there being many benefits to wearing sunglasses, there really is little excuse to be left in the shade when summer comes around again.
