Solar power in the home is growing in popularity. But many people think that the cost of solar power at home puts it out of their reach. However, there are ways that you can begin to incorporate solar power into your home, which aren't as expensive, and will lower your costs over time. The current cost of a professionally installed solar power system is well over $20,000.00 USD in most cases. However it does take time to have them installed. After all you do go through a contractor, and you have to rely on them to install it. This leaves people slightly apprehensive as they need to install components inside the house as well. For these reasons, many people prefer to use the DIY kits. These kits have all you need to build a basic solar system. Although they do require some lifting and carrying, at least you'll know what has gone into the system and how it works. But be careful when working on your roof. Another option though, is external solar power generators. These work like gas or diesel generators, but of course use the sun to produce energy, not fuel. They have battery backup systems, in the more expensive ones have been shown to produce a lot of power, such as powering a full outdoor concert for several hours. Solar power generators are of course beneficial in emergencies, because they don't rely on electricity. Even if the grid is down, you can produce your own power. And because they don't use fuel, they are very quiet and of course very clean. In the event you either cannot afford or are apprehensive about buying one of these then don't worry, you still have ways to go green. You can buy outdoor solar powered lights to replace your existing bulbs. These charge during the day, and then run off batteries at night, or when turned on. You can also leave them on a timer if you wish. Solar energy has so many advantages over other fuel sources. For starters, it produces no pollution. If you use it at home, your carbon footprint will be significantly reduced. Of course, the main drawback is that you need sunlight to generate power! This is why most systems will have a battery backup system. Although there can be some initial investment to make if you want to move to solar, you begin to recoup those expenses immediately. Your power bills are lower, so you can start to save from day 1.
