Should I join a Social-Network?

By: Roberto Bell

Did you ever ask this to yourself? Many people did, and many people answered YES and joined a social network. The numbers of existing networks has exploded in recent years so as the number of users. Some networks have more than 100 million members and there are many people with two or more social-networking accounts.
They didn't do it without reason, social networks are a great way of communicating with friends and meeting new people. They are a good way to present oneself to world wide web. They help establish and maintain friendships and you can explore all kinds of content shared from other users.
Before social networking websites, it was difficult to meet other internet users. If you tried, you would have to rely on chat rooms or instant messaging services. As nice as these popular internet features are, they are not always considered safe. With chat rooms or instant messaging programs you were often given little reassurance that a person was who they claimed to be. Without profiles, there was no way that you could learn more about a particular internet user, even if you wanted to. Social networking websites have changed that.
Creating your own personal web-profile and make you available for people and friends to find you and contact you on the internet is one of the biggest reasons for joining a social-network.
Here's a short overview of the Top Five Social Networks in the world wide web:
1. MySpace - One of the largest and most known network with over 100 million members . Membership is free.
2. Classmates - A specialty social-network that focuses on relationships built during school and/or college. One of the oldest social-networks. They offer free and paid-memberships.
3. Facebook - Although it has grown to be the biggest social-network with over 100 million members it is still considered to be a specialty social-network because it focuses on High-School, College and Workplace networks.
4. Orkut is the social-network that Google has set-up. It's general social-network, however it is only to possible to join if you have an invitation from an existing member.
5. FriendFinder is a social network that is specialized on connecting people with the same hobbies and for dating. FriendFinder offers free and paid-membership-plans.
If you are looking to join a social networks you're doing nothing wrong if you join one of these networks. However, if you are looking to connect to people with special interests like sports, music, arts or dating you should consider to join specialty networks like punkzFM or DeviantArt.
So it's really a good idea to join a social network. It may even be useful to join two networks, one of the big general networks to connect with people and friends with all kind of interests and one specialty network that addresses one of your special interests like fishing, tennis or biking. Another good reason to join a social network is because almost everyone who uses the internet has at least one account in some social network. Do you want to be the online one without? So I'd say you check for some social networks right away. You have nothing to loose. Most social networks a free to use.
