If you already own a reptile or are thinking of getting your first lizard, snake or other reptile then thinking about where it will be kept is something you need to know first. There are all kinds of reptiles and each have differing needs and as a result there are a variety of enclosures and cages. They all have different purposes and knowing about the needs or your pet is very important. After you know what they need then you can cosider whether to buy a cage or build one instead. Let's talk more about that now. First, consider your reptile's needs and size so you have an idea of what the cage or tank might need to have. For example, if you have a snake that needs lots of heat and will grow to be very large then you may want to consider what materials the enclosure needs to built from. In the same example if the cage was to be kept outdoors and you live in a humid area then you also want to make sure the cage can stand up to the elements and not begin to fall apart on you. This is an important first step and should not be done without knowing your reptile's needs. Then, after you have a general idea of what the pet needs, and where you will be keeping it you can begin to decide whether buying the cage or building it is right for you.You may find that a reptile tank is more suitable than a cage since you only have a small lizard, that's something to consider as well. There a different styles and sizes of tanks and cages that are available to purchase and obviously building some of them may be more difficult then others so let's talk more about making that decision now. Fist of all you need to consider the cost of buying the enclosure compared with building it and the time and effort involved. If you can build a cage with your skill and time and only spend $100, but the same cage costs around $300 in the store then it might be worth it. That's one thing to consider and if you're worried about not having the skill to build a cage there are good e-books and resources that can be easily followed to guide you and are dirt cheap! Check out my website listed in the resource box of this article if you need somewhere to get started. In reference to building the reptile cage or tank, remember, if your pet is going to grow larger in the future you may need another cage. Even if you aren't sure how to build one at this point, learning from someone who does or buying an e-book written by an expert, can save you money on ALL the cages you ever need to build. It's like learning a trade, but a lot easier. Building your cage can be a great money saver and YOU control the look and feel, not the manufacturer. Even though you may realize that building the enclosure is cheaper you might still opt to buy one anyway online or in a pet store. Even though we may have the time and talent to build one we may NOT really feeling like doing it. Maybe we'd rather be playing with our kids or watching the game. That's ok too, after all, it's our time and money so we can choose what is best. Now if planning on buying remember a few things. You should think about shopping around a bit and comparison shop. This is probably a no brainer anyway, but I thought I'd mention just to be thorough. Also consider buying your cage online rather than at a pet store on location. Usually you end up paying more due to the fact that they have overhead costs to pay whereas online stores do not, and can usually "meet or beat" in store prices. It's worth looking into, and make sure you shop for value as well as cost. You don't want to buy a piece of junk cage because it's the cheapest one available. If you end up replacing it sooner because it fell apart now you end up spending twice as much. Don't forget such things as the reptile's lighting needs, how will you get the pet in and out of the cage, or whether there will be a lot of moisture inside. You want to keep this stuff in mind so you buy the right cage for your needs and not buy one that lacks what is best for you. Purchasing a cage is probably the easier way to go, but you won't usually get to tweak the style and design of it, uless you decide to get a custom cage builder to handle the job, but that means big bucks. Hope this helps!
