When it comes to learning a new language, it can be very hard to know when it’s too late to get started. By the time most people reach a certain age, we are either too busy or too pessimistic to really believe that we can go out and become fluent in a tongue other than the one we have been speaking all of our lives. Add to that the doubts that a lot of people thirty and over might have when they look at the average age of many classes that teach English as a second language; most of the students enrolled are really just kids, albeit the average age is around 22 or so. It may double the doubt factor to realize that you are almost twice as old – maybe even more – than some of the other students in the class. The reality, of course, is much different. The fact is that age should never stop anyone from tackling new challenges, and learning English as a second language is certainly no exception. We all have the capacity to learn our whole lives, and in fact many studies have shown that learning something new on a regular basis, such as a language, may actually help to prolong the lifespan of the average human being! Aside from a longer life, taking advantage of a course that teaches English as a second language has several benefits for any student, young or old. Perhaps the biggest advantages are for those who actually live or work most of the time in a country where English is the primary language. The fact of the matter is that for many people living in Canada, the United States, and other English speaking countries, a failure to learn some of the rudimentary parts of the language may pose a serious barrier to health, safety, even transportation. It could be that you have made it through your life just fine so far, but think of how much easier the ability to actually speak and understand the language could make things. In short, there is no reason at all why age, any age, should be a barrier when it comes to learning English as a second language. You are never too old to learn something new, and when it comes to a new language there is nothing but benefits!
