Youve decided that hiring a personal care giver is the best option for your elderly loved one. You feel that this way they will get extra attention because not only will they be getting what they need but you also plan to visit them in addition. You know that a nurse will come into their home on a schedule you line out and that while they are there they will assist your loved one with whatever they need, whether that be their laundry, cooking or remembering to take their medication. You have peace of mind as you think about the fact that you know help will be there consistently and you are grateful that there are services that offer that help for both your schedule and your loved one. The question though that keeps racing through your mind is, with a service like this what kind of nurse am I paying for? You know you are paying for a trained nurse but are you paying for a trained friend? It is important to know that the elderly care in Utah that you are paying for is also based on companionship. You are not and should not be paying for someone simply to come in and work. The nurse that is sent should be one that provides friendship also. Here are a few qualities you should expect from your nurse and if they dont possess these then you have every right to request a new nurse be sent. * Cheery- They should come with an upbeat attitude. Part of their job is to help and monitor the over all wellness of your loved one and if they are gloom and doom every time they come then they arent performing that part of their duty. * Informative- The nurse should be able to either answer of properly research the answer to questions their client might have. They must be able to explain the reason behind everything they do and inform their client as to best practices. They arent a maid who comes in with a check list just to get done. They are a source of information and comfort. * Thorough- A nurse should be very thorough in the tasks they perform. Things shouldnt be left have done. They should be timely and sensitive to the fact that even though your loved one many have diminished abilities doesnt mean they have a diminished quality of life. Things in their life should be important to the nurse and not put on the back burner. Overall just monitor the nurse that is to come, perhaps be there in the home on her first few visits and check in with your loved one every so often to make sure they are performing all their duties.
