Public Enemies

A captivating film based on the real life story of John Dillinger, one of the most notorious criminals of all time. The story is the adapted version of Bryan Burrough’s book “Public Enemies: America’s Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI”. The story weaves a saga of love, hate, betrayal, action, crime and notoriety.

This is a modern Robin Hood kind of story where John Dillinger robs the banks and public properties but never touches the common men. In fact he helps out these simple folks with the money. Nobody complained against him ever but the FBI needed to arrest him to save their reputation. The story is set in Chicago of 1930s where John Dillinger lived. This is a story of the Dillinger’s last few years. He was a bank robber and loved his job. Nothing could make him happier than robbing bank in broad daylight without any fear of reprisal from the officials and authorities. The change started over him when he fell in love with the beautiful Billie Frechette. We also find Melvin Purvis, an agent of the newly formed FBI, who eventually manages to track down Dillinger. It was next to impossible to catch Dillinger in the normal way so Purvis finds men who knew the street tactics to capture Dillinger. John Dillinger has become a sort of folk hero and the FBI chief J. Edger Hoover assigns Purvin to hunt Dillinger down. Dillinger also faced limited options and is emotionally drained as many of his colleagues die. In the end he is betrayed by one of his acquaintance Anna Sage and he is shot by cop Winstead. Dillinger’s last words were for his love Billie whom he called Blackbird.

Jonny Depp as Dillinger is able to catch attention with his heroics and so does Christian Bale as agent Purvis. Some mushy scenes are performed by Billie Frechette played by Marion Cotillard. Other casts include Billy Crudup, Stephen Dorff and Channing Tatum. Screen play is written by Ronan Bennett, Ann Biderman and Michael Mann. The movie is directed and produced by Michael Mann.

The production began in March 2008 in Columbus, Wisconsin. The actual location where the original gun battle was fought between Dillinger and FBI i.e. Little Bohemia Lodge in Manitowish Waters also featured in the movie.

The movie was released worldwide and the premier was held in Chicago on June 19, 2009. The movie is rated pretty high on the box office and also has been nominated for two awards at teen choice awards. The nominations were for best movie and best male actor. A moving flick with lots of gun shots and old world charm!!
