Personality Assessments Help Determine the Right Employee

By: T.S. Field

There are five reasons why personality assessments are used by 65% of employers looking for the right employees to fill their open positions. Employers now realize that people spend more hours of their day at work than anywhere else. Therefore, it is very important that the person the company hires be suited for the job. The prospective employee not only needs the skills to do a job, but his personality must also match the job if he is to be happy and fulfilled.
It is important that an employee feels a sense of accomplishment and is challenged on the job. These two factors will not happen when an employee holds a position that does not match the invidual's personality. If an employee's personality is not the right one for the job, productivity and creativity suffers. The employee will become dissaatisfied and will start looking for a job that is more suitable.
There are five reasons why a personality assessment can be useful to the employer:
1. It can determine if a job applicant's personality is right for the job. For example, your company has an opening for a customer service representative. This job calls for someone who enjoys troubleshooting and has a cool and calm demeanor. The best candidate is not someone who is quick tempered or succumbs to stressful situations.
2. Improving communication in a team of employees. One of the human resource manager's responsibilities is to put together a team that can communicate effectively. This calls for flexibility and respect for other's opinions and ideas. A personality assessment can determine a candidate's communication style.
3. The team to which the new recruit may become a member may need to increase its effectiveness and productivity. The team may need someone with a "never give up" outlook or who can inspire the other team members to reach their goals.
4. There may be too much conflict on the team. The hiring manager may be looking for someone who has the qualities of a peace maker.
5. Helping an individual understand himself and others. An assessment will not only give a human resource manager a peek into the prospective employee's personality, but the assessment can also tell the individual things about his personality and what position is suitable for him that he may be unaware of. It is a fact that an individual can better understand others when he can understand himself.
A personality assessment is not always 100% reliable, but it is a way to come close to determining whether an individual's personality is suitable for a job. It can also be valuable in improving team communication, in increasing productivity and effectiveness, in reducing workplace conflict and in helping the individual understand himself and others. This assessment can prove to be beneficial for both the employer and the prospective employee.
