On line College Degrees: What works and what doesn’t?

By: Namita Awasthi

Nowadays, a wide range of online programs are available for students going for on line college degrees. However, there are two sides to getting an online education and only you can determine if it is right for you.

Here are a few things that work in case of on line college degrees:

* On line college degrees offer a flexible education option. You can study in your own time and at your own convenience from the comfort of your own home. There is no need to commute to a distant campus and attend regular classes. This is good news for busy professionals and all those who can't make the time for regular University attendance.

* On line college degrees from accredited institutions have the same credentials as degrees from regular schools and will be accepted by most employers.

* Since independent study and comprehension skills are required for on line college degrees, you will develop good habits of self-discipline and self-reliance. Being competent and confident will serve you well in the workplace later on.

* Going for an on line college degree means that you will necessarily become acquainted with the latest computer technology and software. You will also find yourself learning to interact and get along with a wide variety of fellow students from around the world. Again, this will prove an asset when seeking employment.

Here are a few things that don't work in case of on line college degrees:

* If the institution from which you are taking your on line college degree does not have a legal accreditation from a proper regional association, your online degree will be worthless and of no assistance to you in the job market.

* While online education has gained a wide acceptance, please be aware that some employers may still have reservations about its validity, well-accredited or not. Certain career experts suggest not mentioning your degree is an online one in your resume, but that is not advisable. Honesty is always the best option in the long run.

* On line college degrees require the same amount of work and effort as normal degree programs. So if you are the sort that constantly procrastinates or needs regular supervision and prodding to get your tasks done, then an online education is probably not for you. Come to think of it, with that kind of attitude, any kind of education would be problematic.
