Obama’s Grandmother Gets Renewable Energy Boost

By: Philip Youngwood

Barack Obama’s grandmother, Mama Sarah, is experiencing the benefits of renewable energy following the installation of new solar panels on her house located in Kenya. The ‘photovoltaic’ solar panels work by conducting energy from the sun directly into electricity in a clean, sustainable way.

Residents of Kogelo in Kenya were given training workshops aimed at tackling the twin problems of energy poverty and climate change the region experiences. As part of the Greenpeace Solar Generation Activists project, young Kenyans were taught how the panels generate electricity, how they could be installed and maintained, and their marketing potential.

Solar panels were then installed on the US President’s grandmother’s house as well as the Senator Barack Obama School in Kogelo.

The potential of solar power as a renewable source is huge given that the amount of solar energy intercepted by the earth every minute is greater than the amount of energy consumed by the world in fossil fuels in one year.

Mama Sarah said “I am very pleased that my home has been improved thanks to solar energy and I'll make sure my grandson hears about it. Solar power is clean, reliable and affordable, unlike paraffin that is widely used in the area.”

Solar power can even be beneficial in the UK, where we often experience cold cloudy days. Certain types of solar panels can operate at 25% - 30% of the optimum light level if enough surface is covered.
