Of course, whenever Nintendo release a new games console, there is a sense of inevitability within the gaming community. Gamers become excited by the latest launch, whilst competitors often fear the impact on their existing or emerging products. Releases of the Nintendo DS - and the subsequent DS Lite - and Nintendo Wii in recent years have not only followed this trend, but they have taken it to a whole new level. Concentrating on the handheld market, the Nintendo DS was originally released in 2004, but further refinements by Nintendo saw the release of the Nintendo DS Lite in 2006. The DS Lite is a dual screen hand held console which offers gamers the opportunity to enjoy traditional aspects of gaming, but with further enhancements to their gaming experience employed through touch screen technology and wireless connectivity with other DS Lite participants. Other attractive features of the DS Lite include the backward compatibility of the console with the Game Boy Advance, as well as stereo sound and a micro-phone port. The DS Lite is also available in a wide range of colours. Key to the success of the Nintendo DS - and also for the Wii - has been the ability for Nintendo to create a gaming experience which can be enjoyed by a much broader audience than a games console may traditionally be expected to. Its touch screen technology is clearly a significant advance in the gaming world. The simplicity to gaming that this provides, coupled with a complete spectrum of fun and challenging games, ensure the Nintendo DS can literally be played and enjoyed by the entire family. Popular games released for the DS Lite include classic Nintendo favourites such as Super Mario Brothers, Mario Kart and Zelda, as well as more inventive games such as Nintendogs and Lego Star Wars. With the DS Lite, Nintendo have also released a series of games which stretch the boundaries of what many believe a games console can achieve. The most obvious of these is the Dr Kawashima's Brain Training series of games, which offers gamers the opportunity to exercise their brain with a series of puzzles. Brain Training games have been a huge success, particularly with the elderly. Nintendo have also released Sight Training which follows the same theory as Brain Training, but provides exercises to sharpen the user’s abilities to focus. Others such as Cooking Guide, Imagine Teacher and Mechanic Master, as well as a host of language games, provide further opportunities for the Nintendo DS Lite to become a family favourite. These truly are groundbreaking areas for a console to contemplate, and Nintendo's boldness has been rewarded by the phenomenal success of the DS Lite. And in that respect it is not difficult to see why many high street stores has been and will continue to be inundated by requests and sales of Nintendo DS Lite consoles, games and accessories. In fact, the success of the Nintendo DS Lite has been such a huge in comparison to other handheld consoles on the market that Nintendo have really set the benchmark for handheld consoles of the future.
