Are you tired of suffering from constipation? Would you like to end the pain and discomfort associated with constipation? Are you sick of feeling bloated and having putrid flatulence? Do you realize the dangers of prolonged use of laxatives? Would ten or fifteen minutes be a reasonable trade, if it would help you find a cure for constipation? What if this activity Could make you a better person? Your grandmother has preached this cure to you your entire life. She probably didn't realize it would help cure constipation. This is not eating nuts, fruit, fiber or even prunes. It is not eating less dairy and drinking more water. It is also not exercising. All of these are important and will help find a cure for constipation. This one is far simpler. OK this is an exercise, but it won't ever make you sweat. OK enough already! What is this magic obvious cure for irregularity? Chew your food. In today's world we have been trained to wolf down our food as fast as possible. With all of the commitments we all now have, taking the time to chew our food has been one of the items we chose to bypass. Here is what happens when we do chew our food, and what happens when we do not. First, when we chew. Digestion begins in the mouth. Saliva contains enzymes needed to begin breaking the food we eat down. The chemical makeup of food is altered by adding saliva. Chewing, also physically changes the structure of the food. Take grain for instance. Not only does the saliva begin to change the grain into usable starch (sugar) so our body can absorb it, but the physical action of chewing mechanically breaks the fibers in the food. Your teeth effectively grind your food, so the saliva enzymes can completely penetrate the food you are chewing. When you chew your digestive system is sent a signal by your brain preparing it for food. Your body can prepare itself for everything it will need to properly digest the food you eat. By giving your system a head start, the food you eat is better absorbed and digested. It is passed through your system more efficiently and effectively. The more nutrients absorbed from the food you eat, the less fat that is absorbed for later use. Let me give you that last statement again. The more nutrients that are absorbed from the food you eat, the less fat that is extracted and stored for later use. Women especially, when you eat quickly, your body doesn't absorb the nutrients it needs, but goes into a panic mode and stores every bit of fat it can get for later use. What happens when you do not thoroughly chew your food. Food will not break down properly in your stomach if saliva doesn't thoroughly saturate your food. The way digestion works is the acids in your stomach react with the enzymes in your saliva and break food down to be absorbed. Less chewing means less saliva which means less digestion from stomach acids. Therefore, only the outside layer of the food is digested. Your small intestine can only absorb a small amount of the food, just the outside. Since the majority of the nutrients cannot be absorbed, the undigested food is pushed into the colon, where it lays and rots. This rotting food causes gas, bloating, and pressure. Since all of the fat was absorbed rather than included with the waste to help make it soft, when water is extracted from the colon, you are left with constipation. Now what about making you a better person? By chewing your food completely, you will have less time to talk and more time to listen. Two ears, one mouth, use them in proportion. Your relationships will flourish when you realize what other people have to say while you are chewing.
