Make It Easy Energy Efficiency

By: Andrew Regan

It perhaps goes without saying, but from economising your energy this can help to save you money, as well as protecting the surrounding environment. As climate change and energy efficiency become more prevalent in day-to-day life it becomes clear that there are many simple and straight forward ways to ensure energy efficiency in the home.

As with everything in life, it's easy when you know how and energy efficiency is no different. Contributing towards a more environmentally friendly planet and energy efficient home can be achieved by making small changes to the way you currently live; there’s no need for a radical overhaul.

A spot of energy saving around the home can shave around a significant amount off your annual energy bills, as well as reducing your household's yearly carbon dioxide emissions by around 1.5 tonnes.

One of the easiest ways to save energy is by switching off the lights when you leave a room and switching appliances off properly instead of using standby. Some household appliances actually use more energy when placed on standby, so getting in the swing of this easy energy saving practice is a good start.

Whilst you’re going about your domestic duties try to completely fill appliances, such as washing machines, tumble dryers and dishwashers, before pressing the ’on’ button. One full load uses less energy than two half loads, therefore, a spot of forward planning is all it takes to cut down on the amount of energy you use.

When it comes to considering the lighting of your home, think about using energy saving light bulbs in order to save electricity. As such, each bulb lasts up to 10 times longer than the standard versions and in comparison you can save a significant amount over the lifetime of the bulb.

Heating is another household essential where you can save money. Turning your thermostat down just 1°C could cut your heating bills by up to 10 percent; and it is more than likely that you won’t even notice the 1°C of difference.

Most heating and hot water systems have a programmer which you should use on a daily basis. By setting your heating and hot water to come on only when required you could save money and energy. You may think that switching on the central heating and water heaters only when you need them is a better idea; however, more often they get accidently left on and this will wreak havoc on your energy bills, not to mention consumption.

What's more, when it comes to actually receiving your bill, why not opt for paperless billing? Not only do you conserve paper but some energy suppliers, such as npower and Scottish Power, for example, may offer a discount for this environmentally friendly option.

Indeed, there is much to consider when you are making energy cuts in the home, but from doing so means it is possible to save money and energy at the same time.
