The National Space Centre in Leicester is the UK’s leading visitors attractions dedicated solely to space and astronomy. The striking and futuristic architecture of the building was designed by Nicholas Grimshaw and official opened on 30th June 2001. The National Space Centre is home to many fascinating displays that both educate and entertain. One special display of note is the Soyuz spacecraft with is the only one on display in all of Western Europe. There are numerous interactive displays for people of all ages to enjoy. One such display is the Human Spaceflight: Lunar Base 2025. It has been designed to challenge and involve the visitor on every level. Interactive exhibits will test visitors’ mental and physical ability to survive the long and dangerous voyage into deep space and culminate in a stunning 3D mission through our solar system to the ice moon Europa. As well as its entertaining and educational displays the Space Centre plays host too many exhibitions throughout the year. Star Wars and Doctor Who have both had major exhibitions at the center. Star Wars actors, props, costumes and a whole host of storm troopers have visited the center on a number of occasions. Daleks from Doctor Who have also been known to make appearances as has the elusive Tardis. The Space Center can also boast attracting some real life space heroes with the likes of Buzz Aldrin making a visit. NASA astronaut Brain Duffy came to the centre and gave a fascinating talk on his trip to space. The NASA crew of STS-121, which includes UK astronaut Piers Sellers, gave a talk to MP’s, business leaders and children on the importance and future of the UK Space Industry. The inspiring talk was said to make many of the children consider careers in the space and science industries. The National Space Center is more than a mere visitor’s attraction though. It is a working base for many UK space operations. The recent Beagle 2 Mars Lander was controlled from the centre’s landing operations control room. The Government also houses the Near-Earth object information centre at the Leicester centre.
