Learning a language at school was boring and repetitive. It was writing the same things over and over, or repeating parrot fashion after some crusty old teacher. Thank heaven for the internet. The way we learn has changed too. You can find or learn pretty much anything on the internet quickly and easily. And the learning process is a lot more interesting & it's flexible. I did take Japanese lessons at college thinking it would be more interesting than French. It was in a way but the teacher was wooden and it didn't seem relevant to my life. I often thought about picking up Japanese lessons again but never quite found the time, until I saw an online Japanese language course. I tried some books on how to speak Japanese first and they were interesting but then I saw some online Japanese courses advertised and I took the plunge. One day I saw a Japanese language course advertised online and thought why not? Japanese isn't a simple language but I found learning online fun. Anybody who has a computer can study conversational Japanese, Kanji and numerals at home in their spare time. How long it will take you to learn Japanese online using a software program will depend on your own motivation and if you have a deadline. Such as a looming holiday or job offer. For me I wanted to go to Japan so I invested a lot of spare time to studying the language. I wanted to know the basics but later I continued for the love of it. The language and culture are absorbing and you can dig as deeply into it as you want to go. It's a personal choice. Over the years I've tried different Japanese language software. Some have been expensive and other cheap and the quality varied accordingly. Various ones will appeal depending on your own reason for learning. Many Japanese know commonly used English words and phrases and learn English at school. Lots take private lessons, but their English is generally pretty poor. They're often nervous about speaking English to Europeans the same as we're self conscious when trying to speak another language to somebody fluent in it. Although Japanese writing is incomparable to ours, the pronunciation of Japanese words is often similar. You probably know and use lots of Japanese words every day. Speaking Japanese requires using different sounds to emphasise meaning. With a little practice it soon becomes easy. I'm sure you know and use some of these words: Karate, Origami, Sake, Tsunami, Sashimi Learning a language at home on your computer lets you do so whenever you want. I found if I had some time in the evenings I'd do so rather than turning on the television. If I got up early I'd do an hour of lessons or take my mp3 player to the gym or out walking and listen to them on the go or in the train. There's no homework deadlines to meet and these days there are plenty of places online (like forums) where you can go and practice or get involved with others who are learning too. You can go as quickly or as slowly as you like and you can even take your lessons away with you if you're travelling. You can learn as quickly or slowly as you want. At your own pace, so what are you waiting for?
