Everyone looks forward to going on holiday. But, the couple of days before you leave can be very stressful. There’s all the packing to do, the passports to find, foreign currency to sort out, and much more besides. But, how much time do you spend making sure that everything you are leaving behind is organised as well? Indeed, it’s natural for our minds to be preoccupied with our holidays, but it is also a good idea to make sure everything at home will be kept safe as well. And, there’s more to think about than you might realise. For example, keeping your valuables safe is very important. In fact, if you have a safe that is fire proof and water proof, make sure you store any important documents and paperwork in there, while you are away. No one likes to think anything bad will happen to their homes – but if it did at least you know that the possessions you value the most should survive intact. Furthermore, you may wish to put all your valuable jewellery in there as well. It doesn’t take up a lot of space and if you bolt the safe to the floor, there is very little chance it would be taken if someone did break in. In fact, it’s a good idea to ask a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on your property while you are away, if at all possible. Even if all they do is keep a watchful eye out for anything unusual, it can give you a measure of security you wouldn’t have otherwise. It’s quite common to be in a rush as you’re leaving for your well earned break, but make sure you take the time to ensure you’ve switched off as much as possible. Turn off all the wall sockets you can – but make sure you don’t switch the fridge and freezer off! A lot of people have made this mistake and come home to a defrosted mess as a result. The last thing you want to do when you get home is sort that out and have to make a claim for it. Making sure you have proper locks on all the doors and windows will keep your home safer as well. If you can reduce the chances of someone getting in to begin with, you are far less likely to have any problems. But, it pays to check your home contents insurance policy too. If it is kept up to date and you are covered for everything in your home, you won’t have to worry about struggling to make a claim if anything does happen. So you can see, a few minutes spent covering all these points will not only make your home safer, it will give you peace of mind while you are away too.
