Keeping Up With the Best Telly

By: Andrew Regan

There are many good programmes on TV at the moment. From late night episodes of Skins to brand new Simpsons, only the most experienced channel surfer can negotiate the various paths that must be taken on the way to catching what you want to see.

And, invariably, two of your favourite programmes are on at the same time. Or he wants to watch the big fight and you want to see the final episode of that murder mystery; the squabbling that ensues is enough to send anyone into partaking in such sneaky tactics as remote-hiding or, worse, arranging a phone call from a talkative relative to distract your opponent while you recline in TV heaven.

However, there are simpler ways to catch your favourite programmes without resorting to tricking family or housemates in such a way that they'll invariably seek revenge. So how can you fix it so that everybody sees what they want? The answer is that you can do this in a variety of ways.

VHS players may be out but it's possible to record onto DVDs and even USB cards for even easier storage. You can also catch many shows online now and broadband speeds just keep getting faster and faster. And, for those stubborn folks that want to watch a show as and when it's on, well, there's always compromise. The good thing about this last option is that if you decide to sacrifice your programmes to suit somebody else's needs this time, you can count on it being your turn to hold the remote next time.

However, if you're a little more flexible about when you watch your programmes, as long as you get to watch them, then there's always the prospect of using your Sky box or similar set top box to record programmes. Boxes like these have the ability to record one or two programmes at the same time and can be set to do so at any time of the day. So if you're desperate to catch that horror movie at 2am but it's a school night, you can still watch it - just make sure you set the parental controls if there are kids familiar with the box setup.

From there, it's easy to find your recordings in the planner and watch them whenever you feel like it - meaning you'll never miss what you want to watch and are freer to compromise on what telly goes on at night or even pursue other interests if you like. It's easy to organise your programmes using services like those offered by a Sky Plus box to plan out what you're going to watch. So no more missing out - it's easy to keep up when you plan.
