Keeping Life Easy: If You Can

By: Andrew Regan

You've had a long day: you got a flat tyre on your way to work, your biggest client cancelled on you, and you lost your mobile phone on your lunch break. Things could certainly be better. But despite the day's relentless stresses, the tedium and chaos is almost over. You'll be in your favourite chair, watching your favourite programme on the telly in no time. Or will you?

Life has a funny way of throwing annoyances your way, often at the most inopportune times. And while mishaps are never fun, they're especially aggravating when you're already having a stressful day. So when you have your heart set on relaxing at home, but instead find yourself having to work late for a 'make-or-break' project, it can seem like some force is deliberately working against you.

That's where the little things can make a big difference. You could find a five-pound note on the sidewalk, or your local coffee shop might offer you an extra, free shot of espresso in your latte. But occurrences like these, of course, are up to chance. You can also take steps to remedy unfortunate situations, should they arise.

For instance, while you might not be able to prevent a flat tyre, you can help make things easier for yourself if you do happen to get one while on the road. Keep a spare tyre, in the boot of your car - just in case. Likewise, losing your mobile phone is something that hundreds of people deal with every week, but mobile phone insurance can keep you covered for a replacement should the situation occur. And you may not be able to help having to work on that make-or-break project but the pay-off might more than adequately recompense you.

Finally, if you do end up stuck at work instead of relaxing at home and catching up on your favourite shows, you don't need to miss them - by installing a set top recorder like a Sky Plus box, you could remedy any risk of missing your favourite TV show.

What other situations could you plan for in advance? Well, just about any. Organised people can manage many situations that would have most people tearing out their hair in panic and, what's more, they tend to get appreciated for their skills. You probably know somebody that always has medication with them that can prove to be a lifesaver or somebody who's never late and never lets you down. By taking a few simple steps to cover yourself against the unexpected, you too could join the ranks of the organised. It only takes a little forward planning.
