Jellyfish Invasion, the jellyfish are coming!

By: Jamie Hanson

You might have often heard about aquatic creatures that are threat to swimmers and other water sports lovers. Just like venomous spiders and snakes, jellyfish is a toxic water creature with fatal sting that can kill you sooner than any other dangerous creature in water. Jellyfish are spreading at a faster rate and are not easily visible due to their tiny structure, but are highly poisonous. Jellyfish has fatal venom that can cause you uneasiness and intolerable pain, but box jellyfish is a deadly species of jellyfish that has the ability to kill three adults! An individual who is attacked by deadly jellyfish can be saved if he is rushed to the hospital or given first aid treatment immediately. A lot of swimmers, who are attacked by venomous box jellyfish, are never saved on time. Out of the 19 species of jellyfish, two are highly dangerous among other deadly creatures on this earth. Even one of the two have enough venom in its sting to kill at least 60 adult people in not more than 3 minutes!

These jellyfish are bluish creatures and are transparent with a cubic body and 4 sides, thus the name box jellyfish. With 15 tentacles on each corner which measure 3 meters, have 5000 sting cells called nematocysts. Jellyfish shoots like a jet at the speed of 4 knots. They are seen in the moist seasons in the creeks or river beds when the seas are calm. These deadly marine creatures are not found in corals or in deep waters or near excessive weed bed or sea grass. These move in smooth waters near the shore and during high tide, these move to the creeks and river mouths. It feeds on crustaceans and small fishes.

There are almost no chances of survival if assaulted by its venomous sting, unless given first aid immediately. The pain that the victim experiences is overwhelming and unbearable that he/she would rather drown than swim to the shore . Vinegar is of great help to person attacked by its poisonous sting. It should be poured abundantly on the tentacles to destroy sting cell immediately. One might also need artificial respiration and heavy massage on cardiac area. The popular box jellyfish, Chironex Fleckeri has a huge body with deadly sting. The stinging cells or nematocysts look like little venomous darts seen on each tentacle along the entire length. The swimmers don't wish to swim in water where these deadly creatures are present. However they are allowed to only when there are safety stinger nets fixed or if they are wearing highly safe specially made costumes for swimming.

Almost 3000 people were stung in the Mediterranean Sea by the deadly box jellyfish. It was thought that in per square feet area of water, there were almost 10 jellyfish. It is commonly seen that jellyfish love to remain in warm and salt waters, thereby allowing swimmers to swim without any tension. But because of global warming, the temperature difference has made offshore water more briny thus pointing more jellyfish on the coastal lines and more towards your unaware legs. Beware, the jellyfish is coming!
