Integrity Deficit of the Anti-Palm Oil Lobbies

By: Palm Oil Truth Foundation-52406

Any idea that the smear campaigns organized by "environmental organizations" like the Palm Oil Action Group (POA), Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth (FOE), the Rainforest Action Network (RAN) and the infamous Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) purporting to show that palm oil cultivation is responsible for a whole host of environmental issues has any shred of credibility goes right up in smoke under the most cursory examination.

Not, that that makes a bit of difference to a mainstream "mediocracy" constantly banging the drum against one of the most productive and sustainable of oilseeds in the world.

So what kind of cursory examination?

POA, Greenpeace, FOE and RAN attempts to paint a picture of Indonesia and Malaysia as foes of the rainforest responsible for intensive deforestation and threatening the extinction of the orang utan.

In the view of the Palm Oil Truth Foundation, this collective group of "environmental NGO's" are beholden to anti-palm oil interests who are trying to stop the expansion of palm oil as palm oil is making inexorable inroads into their traditional markets!

It is indisputable that palm oil is fast becoming the most popular edible oil in the world for a few simple reasons:

1. It is the most productive of all edible oils with a typical yield of 4-5 metric tons per hectare which is close to 10 times higher than its competitors like soya, sunflower and rapeseed (Canola)
2. The oil is inherently healthful as it is naturally rich in anti-oxidants like tocotrienols, Co Q10 and beta-carotenes (which is why the oil is naturally red in colour)
3. Due to its extraordinary yield, palm oil is the cheapest cooking oil in the world and because of its price advantage is now increasingly popular as a feedstock for biodiesel.

In our view, this probably explains why the anti-palm oil lobbies are trembling...and why they have to recruit the environmental NGO's to attack palm oil?

We all know that Malaysia is a small country. It has a land mass roughly the size of New Mexico. Yet the country was for a whole century, the world's largest producer of palm oil. What does that tell you? Palm oil doesn't require quite as much land (in fact, 10 times less land than the western oilseeds) as the environmental NGO's would want us to believe!

Deforestation in Malaysia? In our view, this is a classic case of factual misrepresentation. After 100 years of planting palm oil, Malaysia still has more than 55% forest cover, which is a darn sight better than the 20% or so from the countries of the industrialised west from which these paragons of environmental conscience hail!

But it wasn't always about the environment.

Not too long ago, this site posted an article on the spurious attack job that Michael Jacobson and the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) mounted against palm oil, accusing the oil of being bad for the heart. When a whole host of medical research was brought to bear on Mr. Jacobson that palm oil was, in fact heart healthy in view of its rich array of anti-oxidants like Co-Q10, toco-trienols and beta-carotenes, Mr. Jacobson quickly changed tack and invented the "palm oil causes deforestation and orang utan extinction" melodrama!

It is indeed instructive to quote Michael R. Eades, MD: "What I find particularly loathsome about Michael Jacobson and the CPSI is that they apparently created the orangutan ‘crisis,' which they knew to be untrue to bash Mr. Paul Newman and others who use palm oil in their products.

According the the New York Times: Mr. Jacobson denies that he has a personal campaign against the Newmans and concedes that their palm oil isn't killing orangutans. But he still takes their labeling to task."

Says Eades: "How could you believe anything this man says?" (see: http://www.proteinpower.com/drmike/uncategorized/palm-oil-fights-back/ )

Suffice it to say that the "environmental NGO's" like the Palm Oil Action Group (POA), Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth (FOE), the Rainforest Action Network (RAN) who jumped on the CSPI bandwagon and carried their morally smeared batons will eventually find themselves morally stained and consigned to the dustbin of history! THE END
