When you go out to buy your first car, the last thing you’re thinking about is accident preparation. Indeed, by its very nature, an accident is usually an incident occurring without warning, and one that takes you by surprise. However, it is an unfortunate fact that accidents do, and will, happen. As a result, if you own a car, it’s intelligent to be as prepared as possible. Of the estimated 30 million cars on the road in Britain today, around 40,000 of them are involved in serious road accidents every year. On top of that, statistics for 2006 revealed that there were 3,172 fatalities occurring due to road accidents, with 169 children and 675 pedestrians killed respectively. As the statistics highlight, it’ not just motorists that are affected, and as such, it’s even more imperative that you drive with caution. It is also crucial that you are aware of your surroundings at all times, regardless of if you’re driving in the countryside, inner city or the suburbs. In fact, one of the best ways to prevent an accident from happening is to drive safely, observe the rules of the road and keep in-car distractions to a minimum. It is also essential that you ensure your vehicle is both safe and roadworthy. This includes having it regularly serviced, so that any potential problems can be dealt with swiftly. Making sure the car is fitted with working seatbelts, and if possible, airbags, is another must. However, if there are airbags in the front of your car, it’s vital that no children under the minimum age/height restriction – younger than 12 years and smaller than 1.52 metres - are placed there. In addition to staying alert, it’s also a good idea to make sure your car is carrying the right equipment and documents, should an accident happen. Firstly, having a mobile phone is very important. Although you should never use it whilst driving, it can prove to be an invaluable lifeline in times of emergency. Placing a first aid kit, as well as blankets and a torch in the car is another way to be prepared. And, if you’re driving in more rural areas, it’s worthwhile packing some food and water, in case you become stranded. Having the appropriate level of car insurance cover is vital; however it may also make sense to ensure you have a level of accident recovery in your policy. Indeed, as the statistics revealed, there are thousands of road traffic accidents every year and it’s impossible to predict if you will be caught up in one or not. Therefore, it’s important that you carefully assess your needs, in order to find the most appropriate car insurance package. Of course, having an accident on the road is not want you want to be constantly thinking about; but being as prepared as possible can help to ease both its physical and financial impact. Consequently, before you hit the roads, make sure you’re equipped to deal with the unexpected.
