The current economic climate is having an effect on all parts of modern life and while many households are tightening their budgets accordingly, there are certain things that cannot be cut out completely. Desirable designer clothes can be kept firmly on the wish list, budget supermarkets offer affordable alternatives to help cut the weekly shop and cutting out alcohol will help dramatically reduce outgoings. If you have children, however, you'll need to be careful where you make the savings. Healthy food - although a bit more expensive - is a must and treating youngsters on their birthday is something no one wants to have to forsake their own offspring. Things can quickly mount up, though. As well as presents, a special family meal is often the norm followed by a celebration with friends. While older children may understand the need to cut corners on their special day, but if you go too far the younger ones will be mystified as to why their birthday isn't being cherished how it used to. Many children's parties involve going out somewhere that involves either an entrance fee or a hire cost and this - along with any extra refreshments or entertainment - often pushes the price up dramatically. One idea to save money - and still provide a great time for all involved - is to hold a party in your home. Many of today's generation will have experienced birthday parties of the same ilk when they were growing up and many of the games still hold the same charm for kids nowadays at little expense to the hosts. Classics such as pass the parcel, musical chairs and pin the tail on the donkey still hold the same level of enticement and wonder for today's generation. Adding a theme to the party, such as fancy dress costumes, always adds an extra dimension to the proceedings and you can even use the outfits in a game - perhaps make the children have a fashion show of their costumes or a competition to honour the person who came in the best dress-up. A little creativity can also help. Instead of spending money on expensive decorations you can use your artistic flair to produce some yourself. Dig out any coloured paper you have in the house, cut it into strips and then glue the ends together to make interlocking hoops. Add a bit of glitter to make it sparkle and you're pretty much set. While cutting back on certain parts of your budget is a wise thing to do during times of economic trouble, there are always ways to spend wisely to ensure you can keep you and your family entertained.
