How to Get Great Looking Skin with AHA

By: Sally Brooks

How many times have you heard the same tired lines about how this product or that product will produce the results you want - and fast! There is no industry more heavily reliant on expectation marketing than the skin care industry. After all, your face is the most telling part about you. It is the first thing people notice about you. It is so deeply personal, marketing that convinces you that you'll have a prettier face is powerful, indeed. Out of all the products on the market one stands out from the crowd. Alpha Hydroxy Acid, or AHA actually works. Let's take a look.

Understanding exactly what AHA is goes a long way in explaining how it works. AHA is a class of acid that includes 5 different types, most of which are found naturally occurring in many plants and animals. The include glycolic acid, lactic acid, malic acid, citric acid, and tartaric acid - these are all considered AHA's. In skincare, we almost always see Glycolic and Lactic acid as the main AHA's used - primarily Glycolic. The defining characteristic of an AHA is solubility. You see, AHA's are water-soluble, which means that water will break down the acid. This characteristic means that AHA's will exfoliate the surface of the skin, but will not penetrate the pore.

AHA is fun to use because the results are fast and can be dramatic. After your FIRST use of an AHA, your skin will be noticeably smoother to the touch. It may also have a tighter look - this is no accident - there is less texture to your skin surface because all the dead skin cells and dirt have been removed!

The effect is more pronounced with additional use. Over time, you will see a marked improvement in tone and complexion. AHA's are great at reducing age spots and hyper-pigmentation. Wrinkles will also be reduced, more and more over time. As the AHA exfoliates the bad stuff from the surface, new healthy skin cells will replace them, often making fine lines and wrinkles fade away.

Just wait until you see the initial results! Although many skin care products say you'll get results fast, this truly is the little acid that could. You'll get results fast and almost always be happier. Serums and expensive wrinkle creams out there may work over time, but few products have the ability to work as well or as fast as a good AHA. Start working toward better looking skin today.
