How to Ensure Spiritual Growth in Your Child

By: Erik Heyl

As parents, we all want what is best for our children, from schooling to clothes, to food, to fun, we know it is important that they be given every opportunity to express themselves. But what about spiritual growth? After all, this is an important part of a child's development as this is what helps develop faith in themselves as well as faith in things they may not always understand. But how do you ensure spiritual growth in your child?

One of the best ways to do this is by having them regularly attend chruch service with you. Not only will this enable them to learn how to properly interact with both their peers and adults, it will also serve as a base to get them questioning and thinking about more than just what they may see on the television.

And herein lies the problem: To a child, most church services are very long, hard to understand and boring. And if a child is not fully engaged and interested, he or she will not learn anything of value. But how do you ensure that they get taught the lessons correctly while keeping their interest?

The best way to do this is to bring the teachings of the Bible down to a kid friendly level. Although there are different ways to do this (Sunday school and games), the best way is via DVD.

"DVD?" you ask. Yes and here is why: with a dvd movie specifically designed for kids, you can be sure that the message is put in such a way that they will understand it, due to its visual nature. And because it is the retelling of the stories and parables they hear in church, they will grasp the meaning behind them that much faster.

The best part about using a teaching aid such as a DVD is that your child can watch which story they want at any time, which will also give them a sense of control over at least one thing in their life. The DVD can be watched by the whole family as part of "family time" or as a way to reaffirm the lessons taught at a particular service.

Another benefit of learning visually is that it doesn't take effort to do so. You just pop the DVD in and watch. This can also be used as a way to have discussion on particular parts of the story and can be used to help relate what is shown on the screen to everyday life, which is also important.

Ultimately, how you choose to help your child grow spiritually is up to you. But by using visual aids, you can ensure that they remain engaged, interested and curious. And that is where the real learning begins.
