Once you have decided to go ahead with your plastic surgery, it's time to decide on a surgeon to do the procedure. Obviously, finding the right surgeon is of utmost importance, as this will affect every aspect of the experience, especially the end result. There are many things to consider and the decision should only be made after you have asked many questions, done some research, and feel very comfortable with your choice. The first thing you should do when looking for a plastic surgeon is to talk to friends and family members who may have some information about a qualified plastic surgeon. If you can find a plastic surgeon by the recommendation of a friend or coworker, it can help so much, as it is based on a firsthand experience. Another person you may want to ask for a referral is your family doctor. They will be able to give you vital information and answer most of your questions regarding the surgeon, his procedures, and other important facts. Unless you are 100% sure of who you want to perform your surgery, you should plan to interview a couple of licensed surgeons before making your final decision. It is important to remember that a plastic surgeon must be licensed within the state he is practicing in. As an example, you should check with the California Health Department by phone or on the internet if you are considering a surgeon in California to do your surgery. There, you can find out important information about licensed surgeons, such as where they were educated, how many years of experience they have, where they have practiced before and other things you might like to know. Next, plan to spend some time researching the particular plastic surgery you are considering. The more you know before you visit with the proposed surgeons, the more you are going to learn. As you read and study information on the internet or at the library, write down any questions you may have. It is important that you understand as much as possible ahead of time so you will be able to converse intelligently with the surgeons and find the answers to your questions. Don't leave your concerns to memory; jot them down so you will remember when you interview the doctors. Next, you will want to set up an interview with the surgeons you are considering. Explain to the receptionist that you are considering that particular surgeon and you would like to meet with him or her to introduce yourself and get some questions answered. Any time you are not given this privilege, it is time to find a new surgeon, as this consultation visit should not only be allowed, but encouraged. A surgeon who truly cares about his patients and wants to do a good job will take the time to meet with you and discuss any and all concerns that you may have. Be sure and take your written questions, listen carefully to what the surgeon says and jot down notes and other questions that may arise as you converse with the plastic surgeon. Do not be afraid to ask the surgeon any questions including his education, experience and if there are any past or pending lawsuits. Although it is not a guarantee for you, ask to see photos of other patients before and after their surgeries. This may help you to know the surgeon's abilities and skill. As you talk to the surgeon, be aware of how you feel talking with him or her. Are you comfortable and relaxed with the surgeon while discussing your options for surgery? Are you able to get satisfactory answers to your questions? These are all things to consider at the interview. After your consultation visit, you will want to visit with someone from the medical office to find out about payments, insurance and any other important information about office procedures. You will also need top plan to ask questions at the medical office of the surgeon. You need to find out who will be treating you for care after the surgery. Will it be the surgeon, an associate, or someone else they work with? You also need to find out where the surgery will be performed. If it is at a hospital, you need to get information regarding what will be required of you there and where you will be going. Some minor surgeries, such as breast implants, can be performed in an operating room at the doctor's office. However, if there is an emergency situation, you need to know what the plan of action will be. If you leave the interview feeling uneasy or unsatisfied with the meeting, you need to look elsewhere for a plastic surgeon. Finding a surgeon that is genuinely concerned about you and is easy to talk to is very important. Taking the time to find the right plastic surgeon will put your mind at ease and give you the confidence to get your surgery completed without worry or concern.
