Hong Kong Highlights: Where East meets West

With its long history as a British dependency - which ended with its transfer to China in 1997 - Hong Kong offers a unique chance to sample the meeting of Eastern and Western Cultures. The island glories in a stunning setting on the Pearl River Delta and its natural beauty contrasts with impressive horizons of modern skyscrapers. A hub for financial services, it offers plenty of cultural, shopping and dining attractions too.

If you are travelling to Hong Kong on business you are likely to find yourself in the Central and Western District. If you can, take time to experience the astounding Central-Mid-Levels Escalators which scale 135m and take an incredible 20 minutes to complete its full journey between Des Voeux Road and Conduit Road. As such, tourist bars and restaurants line its route.

At the Des Voeux Road end you will also find the Lanes - as much a form of entertainment as a market. Here you will find everything from jewellery and watches to clothes and luggage for sale. Another great insider tip is Stanley Street, in the Central Area, where you can pick up excellent photographic equipment at bargain prices. You can also bag some great antiques in Hollywood Road.

If you want to stock up on shopping bargains then head to the Eastern District. While it is mainly industrial and residential there are also some large outlets to explore. Taikoo Shing has the largest mall with 160 shops to browse. Hong Kong also offers many more great buying opportunities - take the ferry across to Kowloon where you will find both the latest fashion trends in malls such as Harbour City and bargain outlet stores in Granville Road and Hung Hom.

Back on Hong Kong Island you can take in the stunning scenery of the Southern District with its country parks. You will also find the famous Jumbo Floating Restaurant of Aberdeen which has featured in films and looks like a Chinese Imperial Palace. It serves an appetising selection of western, Cantonese, and traditional Hong Kong food, as well as having tea and wine gardens.

Stanley is another popular location in the Southern District. The large openair market is a must for silks and souvenirs at bargain prices. It also has a wide range of bars and restaurants situated on the seafront which are perfect for chilling out in the sunshine. And be sure to allow yourself more time for sun worshipping on either Stanley Main Beach or St Stephen's Beach.

The other popular area of Hong Kong is Wan Chai which is chock a block with luxury hotels, skyscrapers, shopping opportunities and an arts centre. Of course, depending on the time of year you choose to take flights to Hong Kong, you could even be in town for the Chinese New Year where you can watch the impressive firework display.
