Having fun in a role playing forum

By: Jim McManaman

A roleplay forum, also known as play by post, is a forum where users post to roleplay as make-believe characters. "Role playing" is to imagine being another person for entertainment. While there are vast amounts of online games advertising themselves as RPGs, these are mostly action or exploration games with a slight roleplaying element: killing enemies and finding treasure is the real purpose in those titles.
If you start roleplaying on a forum, however, all you have is text; none of the cutting-edge, impressive 3D graphics whose only purpose is to conceal the complete lack of depth in most commercial games today. Forum roleplay returns the fantasy back to you, the dreamer: you are no longer a sprite that can only jump, run and kick. Your character can have a past, feelings, motivation, and a rounded personality.
A great thing about such forums - in addition to being completely free to use - is that you will certainly stumble upon one that you will like. A majority of them are set in a fantasy world, but several are sci-fi or even steampunk. On some forums you can even roleplay as a wild beast such as a cat or dog.
Many forums are based on established movies, fiction or shows, with users being able to roleplay actual characters from those series as well as new ones. Some websites, however, and in particular fantasy forums, offer unique worlds that are their players' work. This second type are often the larger sites with a lot of people to write with.
Playing is very simple: you post an adventure hook on the forum, such as your character going out for a walk. Another user will reply with their own character, roleplaying him or her as they encounter yours around the city. Nobody can foresee precisely in what direction the plot is going, which is one fun aspect about these games.
Obviously, in a fantasy role play your character will probably be able to cast fireballs and do the wonderful things you have come to expect of your RPGs, but the primary emphasis is on your character's personality and reactions. Basically, you are composing a short novel with other players: the formal name for this is collaborative storytelling and it is a fun, empowering pastime. Your writing ability will also improve a lot and you will notice you have become more confident and imaginative.
Users of many forum roleplays think of themselves as having more vivid writing, and even better grades in school as well as greater confidence in expressing themselves with words. Moreover it is also a highly social pastime in which you cooperate with your friends on a much deeper level than just joining a guild to go raid a cave. If you have always dismissed actual role playing as a silly or useless game, perhaps it is time to reconsider.
