Have You Tried A Historical Holiday?

By: Paul McIndoe

A beach holiday has a lot to offer from sunshine and relaxation - there’s certainly nothing like it. But when you come back home you probably won’t have many lasting memories from a holiday like that. It’s definitely not the same as going back in time.

Of course, you can’t really travel back in time by jumping on an aeroplane and heading to another country. But it can feel like that if you choose your location well and take the opportunity to explore the relics from the past that are still standing today.

Take Egypt, for example. There aren’t many other sites in the world that are capable of taking your breath away in quite the same way that the Pyramids and the Sphinx do. You can see these under your own steam, or you can take a guided tour that will reveal many of the secrets of Egyptian times.

But while Egypt may be one of the first destinations that spring to mind when thinking of ancient times, there are many more places to enjoy as well. The Terracotta Army that can be found in China is just one example. This stunning and humbling display dates back as far as 210BC, and no photo ever does it justice.

Another archaeological area with great merit for an unusual holiday is Pompeii. Located in Italy, this town was buried during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD79. Its inhabitants were going about their daily business at the time, and were buried where they stood. It would be centuries before the buried town was discovered once more, and it is perhaps most famous now for the plaster casts that have been made of the victims. Walking along the same streets that were used by the people who lived there is an eerie experience, but one that makes for an unforgettable holiday.

There are many other locations all around the world that provide the ideal setting for travelling back in time. Many of the World Heritage Sites are well worth a visit in this respect; while some are from more recent times, others go back centuries and have a long history.

A good place to start is with the country you would like to visit. You can then explore the possibilities that lie within it, and consider whether to stay in one place or hop from one to another. There are sure to be plenty of hotel deals available wherever you go too, so be sure to plan in advance the type of holiday you wish to budget for.

In the end, you can still have a relaxing holiday; but there is nothing quite like learning more about the world you live in, and how it used to be in times gone by.
