Getting a Motorcycle Helmet for Your Child

By: Ben Wegman

Letting your child begin to ride a motorcycle or ATV is a big step. It's important you set the right habits from the beginning and that definitely starts with wearing a helmet.

It's easy to get caught up with your child looking for helmets that look cool or have neat features. However, it's really important to remember that safety is your number one concern. A helmet should protect from head and neck injuries.

With the proper helmet, an accident will protect their head and the helmet should never crack. After all could you ever handle a head injury to your child? It would be tough so be stern and make sure you get the right type of helmet.

You could start out by knowing what standards are being enforced by the DOT, including those regulations covered by the FMVSS, all geared towards protecting U.S. motorists and motorcycle riders including children.

Knowing that you have a DOT helmet can put you at ease. You know that your helmet is up-to-date on the most important safety standards and developments. And that's watching over your child's motorcycle safety.

The Internet has many great resources for helping you to find the best helmets. Make sure that you look for stores that are selling certified helmets. Some sell what I call luxury helmets costing many hundreds of dollars and some sell helmets that are less expensive, but more protective. The right store will have a size chart so you can be sure that you get the right size for your child.

Simple enter "kids motorcycle helmet" or something similar into a search engine like Google. You will immediately be given a listing of different stores where you can then find a trusted provider and make your purchase easy.

However, it's important to remember the basic features of safety you're looking for in the first place. The best helmet is usually a full face helmet. This is so because they provide your child with full head coverage and a protective shield. The shield will help protect your child from road debris as well as UV rays. These helmets also come equipped with ventilation. That helps the shield from not fogging up and allows your child to better breath fresh air. The full face helmets also protect your child from damaging their hearing by dampening the sound of a loud or large engine. These helmets continue to be the best because of their snugness which prevents from slippage as well.

Children's helmets are aerodynamically tested for speed such that they can sustain sudden impact at high accelerations. They are made of fiberglass material which is strong and resistant, yet lightweight so as not to cause strain on young necks. Padded neck rolls offer added shock absorption, and cushioned chin straps protect another vulnerable portion.

However, just because these helmets are incredibly save, does not mean they don't come with great colors or graphics. Some of the better priced helmets come in solid colors allowing your child to decorate their own helmet. Bottom line is DOT helmets are great for your kids and will allow them to ride long, hard, and most importantly safe.
