Fancy a Test Drive in The Lotus 2 Eleven

By: Susan Roberts

Let me be frank from the very beginning; the Lotus 2 Eleven is certainly not a car for the casual Sunday driver. If any car I have witnessed deserved to be rubber-stamped with 'For Extreme Car Enthusiasts Only' it would most certainly be this one. For an explanation of why this is the case I will revert you to two plain and simple facts. The first being that the Lotus 2 Eleven's supercharged, intercooled engine delivers a tarmac-tearing 252 BHP and the second being that it weighs a paltry 745 Kg. If there was anything more than a stiff backwind whilst you were driving it, you would most probably take off and not be seen for days.

One excitable press-release states that it has a similar power-to-weight-ratio of a 1960s Formula One car; a fact that fans of the late, great 60's driver Jim Clark may see as a tad off-colour considering he tragically died in a 1960s Formula One car that happened to have a Lotus badge on the front.
So as you can plainly see, amateurs need not apply.

The first thing that strikes you about the Lotus 2 Eleven is the breathtaking supercar looks. The bold design of this mid-engine, rear-wheel drive monster has veered violently away from the majority of other supercars currently available. You get the legendary Lotus ride, with the pinpoint handling and race performance, but that is pretty much all you get. No extras, no luxuries; just you, a feather-light aluminium body structure and the pure aggression of the 1796cc engine. To say it wasn't a 'practical' car would be something of an understatement. This is exactly why the only place you should see one of these fine machines as at the race track.

To underline this point further, it is important for me to explain that the entry -level model in the Lotus 2 Eleven isn't road legal, but it is a great deal cheaper than pretty much every other supercar on the planet. For around the £27k mark you get the basic 2 Eleven, but to take it on the British Highways you need to add the SVA Pack (Lights, Horn, Mirrors etc...) to keep the Government and the Police happy. Add to that extras such as passenger seats, On the road costs and any other practical enhancements and the cost of the entry-level 2 Eleven jumps up to closer to the £32k mark.

This is why we love the Lotus 2 Eleven though; as it has almost endless modifiability. Any time you may think that you own the consummate example of the Lotus 2 Eleven, you can guarantee there will be a newer supercharger, adjustable Ohlins dampers, lighter wheels, a big wing and front splitter, two different types of differential, a removable steering wheel or a full FIA-approved seat with six-point harness. The seeming inability to own the 'complete' Lotus 2 Eleven is what has drawn such unbridled levels of enthusiasm for it and is likely to ensure its popularity with track fans for years to come.
