Dying with the Stars:the DUI Phenomenon

By: Terrence Chase

Preface: My purpose for writing this article is to sow concern to all readers regarding one concern that has been plaguing the country today Thanks to misbehaved celebrities, this would not have been a much-talked about matter. An increase of 6.25 percent has been made last year for this not-so-welcome intruder. Thanks to the recently-freed Paris Hilton, DUI or drunk driving would not have been a national issue.
In every two minutes, a person gets injured in a drunk-driving related incident, according to NHTSA or National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s report for 2005. Even worse, in every 31 minutes a person gets killed. A much worse number was recorded last year as a person dies in every 29 minutes on a similar situation.
Not only lives get affected, but the livelihood of those victims get affected as well. A total of US$51 billion worth of damages cost alcohol-related accidents including auto parts damages. Kansas, which ranked 33rd on drunk-driving deaths, had $3.4 million worth of damages per fatality. However, costs have largely dropped to those who only got injured. Estimated cost per injured in Kansas would be $97,000. It is twice larger than the median family income in the state which was at US$43,725.
Not surprisingly, states with large cities make up the most of these cases. California, Texas, and Florida, which altogether comprise the top 3 states in terms of alcohol-related fatalities, took up ¼ of the country’s total in 2005. Majority of these deaths came from people between 20-29 years old. 21 percent of all vehicular fatalities that involved children below 14 years old would be alcohol-related .
Almost 1.4 million were arrested in 2005 due to drunk-drivng. Surprisingly, self reports of alcohol-impaired driving is more than 100 times more than what the police had arrested. In 2005, some 159 million instances of self reports on drunk-driving have recorded.
If there was any consolation regarding this matter, there was a huge decrease in percentage if you would compare 2005 with 1982. A 12 percent difference separates 1982’s record to that of two years ago. Unfortunately, numbers continued to add up again by the end of last year.
Hopefully, this article will instill an awareness in all readers. In 30 minutes, someone will die because of some drunk-driving concern. May we all be more aware of these increasing numbers.
