Although a tiny speck in a very large desert until as recently as the start of the last decade, Dubai has since shot to prominence as the newly crowned ‘hub of the Middle East’. It is ‘the’ place to be seen by the wealthy and famous, and many of the world’s top celebrities are flocking to one of the world's most expansive and expensive millionaires’ playground. At the same time as developing a number of impressive skyscraper and luxury developments, the Emirate has also introduced a series of sporting and cultural festivals. For example, despite being a relatively new event, The Dubai Desert Classic is already established as a premier world golfing occasion purely because of the phenomenal size of the prize purse. But, when it comes to festivals staged in the most ostentatious of the Emirates, the month long Shopping Festival takes some beating; spanning the last two weeks of January and the first two of February, it is an entire 32 days devoted purely to the art of acquiring huge amounts of material goods! Attracting more than 2 million visitors spending close to $1 billion during the month, the Dubai Shopping Festival encompasses much more than just fantastic retail frenzy. Performances from top street artistes, spectacularly staged theatre shows, a glorious film festival and even prize draws offering winners such incredible pickings as solid gold bars and top-of-the-range cars. But, whatever is on offer to shoppers bartering is the order of the day, whether they are in such illustrious and ultra-modern shopping venues as Dubai Creek, or the smaller and more traditional bazaars of Dubai. Travellers to the Emirate can purchase all manner of goods from the superb carpets and rugs traditionally associated with the Persian Gulf to exotic and expensive 22-carat gold jewellery. Bulky items such as walnut furniture and handier-to-carry Arabic coffee pots are Middle East specialities and are all available during the Dubai Shopping Festival. Duty free sales on flights to Dubai during this period must be woefully low as everyone saves their cash for the superb shopping available once on the ground. Even the most ardent of shoppers will need a break from their retail therapy and Dubai offers plenty of leisure choices to fill the hours when purchasing activity is suspended. From the gorgeous, sandy Jumeirah Beach to the incredible indoor Dubai Ski and the plethora of golf courses designed by top professionals, there is plenty to do in this holiday playground.
