Dressing Up and Parties: How to Get it Right!

By: Andrew Regan

Although invitations for formal parties may state a dress code, for most bashes these days it will often be a ‘come as you are’ affair, meaning that you can look as good as you want. And for men that means plenty of choice!

Indeed, the festive season is the time for dressing up and attending the many parties on offer. Whether it’s the usual range of fancy dress themes or merely dressing to the nines for the office party, getting your outfit sorted well in advance means that you won’t be scrambling around at the last minute, desperately looking for the best outfit.

As it goes, it can often seem that come the time to dress up for the latest party occasion, girls have far more choice when it comes to their outfit selection. Indeed, women certainly do have more options in terms of whether to wear a party dress, a smart skirt, a racy skirt or a range of trousers. But it is important to understand that there is also a huge choice of on-trend garments for men; from smart casual to formal there is an enticing amount of combinations available.

And, if you are scratching your head and wondering what to wear, don’t be dismayed. Here are a couple of pointers that are guaranteed to turn heads you way at the festive bash.

Starting with the formal black tie occasion; although men are expected to don a straightforward black dinner jacket and trousers combination, there are alternatives that will make you stand out from the crowd. A white dinner jacket is normally for summer wear, but there is no reason why it can’t be worn in the festive season. In addition, why not replace the traditional black tie with a coloured or checked bow-tie.

But, even if you prefer to stay traditional with the dinner jacket and trousers combination, you can still add a dash of colour from a huge choice of patterned waist coasts and sparkling cummerbunds. However, it is often advised that you stick with white when it comes to formal shirts; either stiff wing-collar or a more relaxed standard collar, depending upon what suits you best.

On the other hand, for informal parties shirts can be as colourful or patterned as you choose; from a cool casual short sleeve check shirt to a warm long-sleeved textured garment. But for the average festive party, plain smart shirts will do the job perfectly.

Furthermore, fashionable smart shirts in a range of bold colours are currently de rigueur, as are the evergreen traditional choices of crisp white or deadly black and collars can be granddad style or traditional, depending on which suits you best. And if tempted to add a tie to your smart shirt, bold bright colours such as purple are popular and 80s paisley is also making a comeback this season.

When it comes to trousers, jeans, cords or smart trousers are all perfectly acceptable and won’t look out of place at any smart casual gathering. And the same rules as everyday wear apply with the decision to wear shoes or trainers namely, whatever looks best. Therefore, have fun this festive season at whatever party you end up at; the most important thing is to have fun and not fret over your outfit!
