When people don't have a job anymore they have two basic problems – they don't have any money, and they have too much time on their hands. Both of these are counterproductive in a lot of ways, and one of those ways is online gambling. When people are out of work and their bills are coming due they can get desperate for some income, and that makes them resort to things that they wouldn't otherwise do, like gamble, hoping for some quick cash. Not everyone does this, of course, but there is more of it seen when times are bad than is seen when times are good. What makes people do it can be puzzling. It can't be just for money, because people are generally smart enough to understand that gamblers don't always win and a lot of them actually end up losing a lot of their hard-earned money.

Studies have shown, though, that people do gamble more when the economy is bad and when they aren't making much money or have lost their jobs. It's the paranoia of not having enough money coming in, but it's also the concern that they don't have anything else to do. With no job they suddenly find that they have all kinds of time on their hands. They need to find a way to fill that, and searching for a new job isn't the only way that they can do that. They can also work toward learning a new skill, they can take up a new hobby, or they can go back to school. Many people will do these kinds of things, but some of them will just turn to gambling instead.

It's easy, it's fun, and when they do win some money they feel as though they have made a contribution toward paying their bills or taking care of their families. They might even have a lucky streak and win money for a while, but in the end they often end up losing much more than they won. It's unfortunate for them and for the people who are relying on them for support, but it's certainly not unexpected, especially with the state of today's economy.
